Hello, Darlings! Today’s topic is Lifestyle Clothing- IBKUL. I live in the South where we have hot weather until November. Sun protection is a concern and many retailers have embraced the newer fabrics which incorporated SPF protection. I have found that I live in these fabrics because they are lightweight and I can wear them almost all year round.

While many people are shopping for fall sweaters and cardigans, I am looking at lifestyle clothing. With my more casual retirement lifestyle, I have a need for more comfortable everyday wear. The weather is a huge issue because where I live it rarely gets cold. As a matter of fact, the coldest month is August/September when the A/C units are cranked up inside.

Evaluating Your Lifestyle- What Is Lifestyle Clothing?

As I have been going thru this fashion journey, I did a great job of discovering my best colors and understanding my body type. But, I still struggle with embracing clothing that reflects my “true” lifestyle. I have been working hard to stop buying clothes for a lifestyle I do not live. My true lifestyle is made up of my love for tennis, a more casual retirement lifestyle that includes traveling and enjoying my vacation home at the beach. I only need “dressier” clothing for some social functions, date nights, and church. Even church has become so much casual, maybe even too casual.

The “Real” me, no makeup, just sunscreen. Enjoying retirement life in casual lifestyle clothing. My daily uniform is black knit yoga-style bootcut pants or shorts with an IBKUL long-sleeve top. This weekend for our trip to the mountains, I packed several of them and wore them the entire time. For those cooler mornings, I just added a fleece vest that I could easily take off later in the day. Underneath I did have a sleeveless tank with a bra shelf(no bra, just used my nipple covers), so I could take off the IBKUL top if it got hotter during the day. But these tops are “cooling” tops so I did not need to do that.

So this year I have been exploring more brands that incorporate sports fabrics that I can wear for everyday living. I have recently found IBKUL, a company that specializes in moisture-wicking, cooling fabrics with sun protection. IBKUL has many tops with simple classic lines in prints and solid colors for men, women, and children.

No makeup and damp hair (just went behind the waterfall). Not a sweatshirt gal, so these IBKUL long sleeve mock-neck tops work for me. They give me that POP of color I love and are super comfortable and lightweight. This waterfall is Dry Falls just outside of Highlands NC. We enjoyed a week of hiking and discovering waterfalls, and the start of the fall color. Daytime temps were in the mid ’60s during the day.

My Favorite IBKUL Top-Long Sleeve Mock Neck Top

This top comes in 17 different colors and I have 8 of them. I wear this top as an everyday top with black shorts or black yoga-style pants. These tops give me the “POP” of color that I crave, but have the comfort factor that I need. Several of the tops have a netted panel under the arms for a higher cooling factor. Again, due to my climate, keeping cool is important most of the year. In the winter I can add a vest for warmth if needed.

Lifestyle Clothing- Loving Prints

I have always struggled with prints. This year I have found 2 prints from IBKUL that work with my style. I need contrast and prints that are more abstract in design. But the prints need to be in my best colors. So many requirements make finding prints that I will wear, hard. These are two that I have bought, and both have already been worn many times

IBKUL also has prints. My new favorite for fall is this bold camo print — I recently added this **Camo Print Long Sleeve** to my collection. Bold camo print in my Clear/Winter colors. It also comes in a grey/black color combo.

Anthony's of Florida carries this IBKUL print and is on sale — **Anthony’s of Florida** sometimes gets some prints that are not available on **IBKUL’s** website. I grabbed this top the other day. LOVE the colors with the white background. It is also on sale! FYI, the colors are more intense than this picture shows.

What To Do In Colder Months

My weather does not get very cold. Most of our colder days will be in the 50s. If I need to, I will add a vest as a layering piece on top of my IBKUL tops. This is especially true when I play tennis in the winter. IBKUL does carry vests, I have not tried them and prefer to just use my fleece ones.

What Do I Wear For Bottoms

IBKUL was originally created as a line of clothing for golfers. So it is meant to be worn as lifestyle/sportswear/athleisure. I wear my IBKUL tops with my black yoga-style pants, shorts, skorts, or tennis/golf/pickleball skirts. For shoes, I wear my casual sneakers, tennis shoes, or occasionally sandals.

How To Wear White Bottoms In The Summer

Hello, Darlings! Today’s topic is How to Wear White Bottoms In The Summer. This can be hard if you are a Pear or d Body Shape where your challenge area is the hips and thighs. White is the #1 color on the Color Attractiveness Scale, which means the eyes go straight to any piece that has white on it. This is why white can be challenging when putting together an outfit that is balanced.

Fabric Is Important

When choosing a white pair of pants, jeans, shorts, or skirt it is important to take fabric into consideration. Unfortunately, because the eye goes straight to any piece that has white, lumps and bumps can be very noticeable, if not accentuated. EEEK!!! So look for thicker fabrics such as a Ponte Knit or jean material. For skirts, a flowier skirt that does not hug the body will be your best choice.

How To Wear White Bottoms In The Summer- fabric choice is important — A thicker denim material with elastane is a good choice for shorts or jeans because it will hide the lumps and bumps.

Balance The Bottom Half By Adding White On Top

The easiest way to help balance an outfit with a white bottom is to add white on top. This helps draw the eyes back up top, away from the hips and thighs. Remember as a Pear or d Body Shape our goal is to create a balanced look by de-emphasizing the bottom half and drawing the eye UP and OUT.

Choose a top with a print in white to help balance white bottoms in the summer — A printed top with white flowers helps to draw the eye back UP towards the face

Adding a top with a white background or print will help bring the eyes back up. Another way you can do this is to add a layering piece in white, such as a white sweater or printed sweater with white in it.

Use Accessories To Bring Eyes Back UP

One of the easiest tricks to help create balance when wearing white bottoms is to wear white accessories such as a necklace or earrings. Not easy to find, but a pair of white earrings can be a great tool to have in your wardrobe. You can also achieve this with gold/silver jewelry, but just not as effective.

Use A Layering Piece Such As Camisole To Draw Eye UP

Another trick in the balancing book is to use an inner layering piece, such as a camisole in white to help draw the eyes back UP. I don’t like too many layers so I will use my sports bra to function as both bra and camisole. People will not know unless you tell them. You can find a great selection of colorful sports bras, some with details such as lace that can function as a camisole.

Inner layering pieces such as a camisole in white can help balance a pair of white jeans — Here I have used a white sports bra as a camisole and a larger interesting necklace to draw attention back UP towards my face to help create balance.

Create A Column Of Color

When using the principle of Column Of Color, you can either do Inner Column Of Color or Outer Column Of Color. The best one for the d Body Shape is the Outer Column Of Color, but I have found both to be effective.

How To Wear White Bottoms In The Summer- Choose a sweater in white to create an Outer Column of Color — Here I have used the Outer Column Of Color- the jeans and layering sweater are both white.

Inner Column of Color is created when your pants and top are some color, or the background in a print is the same. The Outer Column Of Color works when the pants/bottoms and the outer layering piece are the same color. Both Inner and Outer Columns Of Color will help you look slimmer and taller.

What Shoes To Wear When Wearing White Bottoms In The Summer?

Because we want to de-emphasize the bottom half of our body and draw attention UP towards our face, the choice of shoes is important. Choose shoes to match the white bottoms such as a pair of white trainers or white sandals. You can also go for nude color shoes or metallic ones and still achieve the same goal.

If you are wearing white shorts the best color would be nude or metallic because it will make the legs look longer and you will “appear” taller.

Hello, Darlings! Today’s topic is What To Wear To Spring Wedding In Atlanta. It is Wedding Season! The number of weddings this year is off the charts. So many people put off their weddings or are just now having a formal wedding (but already married) due to Covid issues. My husband and I were invited to a Saturday evening wedding in Atlanta, the invitation indicated the dress attire was a cocktail.

With everything else getting so much more casual, it is great to have the opportunity to “dress up” for an evening. Over the years I have been collecting items to have on hand for more formal/cocktail occasions so I don’t have to rush out to try to find something to wear at the last minute.

What To Wear To Spring Wedding In Atlanta-Check Your Invite For Dress Code

I love it when people put a dress code on the invitation. It makes it so much easier to plan your outfit. The invitation for our event stated Cocktail Attire. For me, that means that men need to wear a suit and tie, and women can wear a cocktail dress, sundress, or dressy pantsuit.

What To Wear To Spring Wedding In Atlanta- Know Your Venue

This is so important. Especially if you are attending a wedding outside in the South. Atlanta in the Spring, Summer, And Fall is HOT and HUMID. So if you are invited to a wedding that is outside, you need to take into consideration the weather. The wedding we were invited to was at a country club where the ceremony and reception were inside, but the cocktail hour was outside.

Even inside events can be either hot or very cold ( we really like our a/c in the South). If you wear a sleeveless dress you may want to consider bringing a light jacket/sweater/wrap.

I have several go-to dresses I can choose from for weddings and other events. I LOVE the “Little Black Dress” or LBD. It is a workhorse for these types of events and I can change the look, but changing the accessories and shoes. My wardrobe consists of several LBDs with different necklines and sleeve lengths.

For Jewelry- Rhinestones or Pearls

Adding jewelry is where the fun begins. The time of day or even the venue can help you decide how much bling is appropriate for a wedding. For a more formal evening event, you might want to pull out your best “bling”. But if the event is in the morning/afternoon or in a more casual venue, pearls are always a great option.

What To Wear To Wedding- Rhinestones or Pearls? Why not both!

If you can’t decide, do both! I decided to wear a gorgeous pair of rhinestone and pearl earrings to the wedding in Atlanta.

Accessories such as rings and bracelets add so much to an outfit

Because my dress had such an interesting neckline, I decided that a necklace might be too much. I let the dress be the show. To complete my jewelry, I added a beaded black bracelet with rhinestones and pearls.

Evening Bag or Not?

I like to take an evening bag to events and weddings, making sure I choose one that will fit my sunglasses, cell phone, tissues, and lipstick. If I don’t, then my husband’s pockets serve as my “keeping place” for these items. But, I have a nice collection of evening bags that I don’t get an opportunity to use. So when events like weddings come along, I want to show them off.

I chose a sequin clutch that fits my cellphone, sunglasses, and a lipstick for touch ups

The evening bag comes in handy to help save a seat for dining. Lucky for us, this wedding had assigned seats (which I LOVE) so we didn’t need to try to save seats.

Add A Lightweight Shawl or Wrap

My dress was sleeveless and I decided to wear a shawl for the evening. This came in handy as the wedding space was quite chilly. It also gave a pop of color and interest to my all-black outfit.

My shawl is the Cashmere Gauze Stole from Kettlewell Colours in Pink Ice. The color gave a touch of softness to the outfit. When the time came for dancing, I just neatly folded it and placed it on my chair as a placeholder. I actually got several compliments on my shawl.

Choose Shoes Wisely

If I was younger, this would not be an issue. But after suffering from plantar fasciitis for several years, I don’t take shoe choices lightly. It is finding a balance between comfort and appropriate for the occasion. Block heels are a great choice for stability and comfort. If you want to wear a higher heel, look for a shoe with a slight platform in the toe area, this will help take some of the stress off your instep.

Be choosy when selecting shoes. I love a block heel shoe with platform toe area for stability and comfort — My shoes are block heels with a platform in the toe bed to give stability and comfort. These are several years old from Stuart Weitzman.

You don’t have to wear high heels. If you chose not to, look for a lower heel with rhinestones to help elevate the look. Stay away from a kitten heel or thinner heel as you will lose stability. Plus, if the venue is outside, you don’t want to be punching holes in the lawn all evening.

Use Pre Heels Spray for blister prevention — Blister preventing spray such as Pre Heels

One of my favorite products to use before you put on your shoes is an anti-friction/blister preventing spray such as Pre Heels. You spray it on, let it try to a tacky feel, then put on your shoes. I spray it on my heel area and where my straps come in contact with my feet.

Treat Yourself To Manicure & Pedicure

I don’t get the opportunity to go to many events, so when I do I like to treat myself to a manicure and pedicure. It is amazing how much better your hands and feet look when your nails are done. I chose a purple/Fuschia color that would go with all my outfits for the weekend.

Many people like to wear a color called Funny Bunny, which is white with a tint of pink, or go with a more natural french manicure look. Not me, I like color. If you don’t have time to get your nails done, there are some great “press on” types of nails that you can quickly put on to give you a manicured look.

To Tan Or Not To Tan- That IS The Question

I will be honest, most people look better and thinner with a tan. Because pantyhose are now considered out of style, need to look at some options for tanning. I am lucky in that I tan quite easily, but in the early Spring months, I need to self-tan, especially my legs so they look thinner and the cellulite is less noticeable if I wear a shorter dress.

I use Jergens Natural Glow self tanning lotion for buildable natural looking tan — **Jergens Natural Glow** for tanning legs, arms, and straplines.

I don’t like spray tan booths, I have had bad results. So to keep it looking as natural as possible (and to prevent orange hands) I use Jergens Natural Glow Firming Body Lotion in Medium To Deep Tones. You can use it daily to help “build up” a tan look. It will not stain your hands, but I still wash them carefully. Test it a week or so before your event to make sure the color works with your skin tone. They do have a lighter version. I do not use this on my face.

Try A Bronzer

To help hid tan lines, I use Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte Bronzer in Hotel Heiress. This is a DEEP color — Use a bronzer to cover straplines and give your skin a sun-kissed glow

I play a lot of tennis, so straplines are a problem. Many times the Jergen’s Natural Glow does not completely cover the straplines so I use a bronzing powder to finish the job. The product I use is the Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte Waterproof Bronzer in Hotel Heiress. This is a DEEP Bronzing color. It is buildable and I apply it with a Kabuki style brush that I only use for the bronzer.

Shop Your Closet First

One of the best things about packing for my weekend in Atlanta is that I could easily “Shop My Closet”. I did not need to run out and purchase anything for the trip. I have built a wardrobe that works for my lifestyle, with pieces that work with my color palette and body type. No panic buying!

This has taken some time to create, but I am thrilled with the results. My closet is organized and labeled and I could quickly find items that are rarely used such as my evening clutch. This makes packing for a trip so much easier.

Hello, Darlings! Today’s topic is the Power Of Prints. Prints are hard, but if you get them right they become workhorses in your wardrobe. Print can minimize or maximize. Which print you pick out and where you put it on your body is key. But remember, knowing your BEST colors, body type, personal style, and lifestyle are key. Our goal is to have a smaller wardrobe that we love and can mix and match.

With swimsuit season just around the corner, I went to Lands’ End website for lots of examples of how you can use color. Lands’ End is my favorite retailer for swimsuits. Their swimsuits are well made, with great support, and hold up to the sun, salt, and chlorine.

The Power Of Prints

Know Your Body Type And Challenge Areas Before Picking Out Prints

If you know your Body Type and Body Type Rule, picking out prints can be easier. Not everyone can wear or should wear printed pants. A great print scarf can draw attention to the face and make you look more balanced. Here is a quick recap of Body Type Rules as it pertains to prints

b Body Type or Apple– You want attention UP and DOWN, away from the belly. Use prints on the bottom, scarves, dresses, and layering pieces. You can wear a printed top that is darker, especially if the background matches your pants (Column of Color). Printed layering pieces that are lighter than the top will work best.
d Body Type or Pear- You want attention UP and OUT. Stay away from printed bottoms unless it is a very dark print and your top is much lighter. Use prints on tops, scarves, layering pieces, and dresses.
O Body Type– This person is overly endowed and tends to gain weight in their chest area. Printed tops and dresses are their friends. The eye doesn’t know where to go and this helps minimize the chest area. They can also wear prints on pants. Stay away from printed scarves as it draws attention to the chest area.
X Body Type or Straight and Curvy– You can wear prints anywhere and can have fun with them. If you have a “challenge area” use the rules above to address it.

Power of Prints – Choosing The Right Print Can Make You Look Smaller

Yes! Choosing the right print can make you look smaller. The keyword here is “right”. Not all prints will do this. We have already discussed choosing prints to match your STAR STYLE. This is key in that a print that is too large, or too small for your body frame can work against you.

Picking Out Prints Using STAR STYLE — Chose prints that are proportional to your body using the **STAR STYLE** method

Power Of Prints- Choosing The Right Color Print

If you are a d Body Shape or Pear, you want prints to be on the top half of your body and lighter than your bottoms or the background the same as your bottom. What you don’t want is your bottoms lighter. Choose dark bottoms and pick a great print.

Power of Prints- Prints on top can draw attention Up helping to create balance even with a swimsuit — A large amount of white in this print draws attention UP towards the face and away from hips and thighs.

This is an example of how a print can maximize. The lighter color draws attention UP and makes the top half look bigger. This is good if you are a d Body Shape or Pear. It helps to create balance.

Power Of Prints- Prints with the same background color as bottoms can create a column of color, making you look slimmer — This would be an AMAZING swimsuit for a d body shape or Pear. The polka dot print draws your eye up, the darker bottom minimizes, and the darker background matches the bottoms creating almost a column of color. Very slimming look. Both pieces are from Lands’ End.

Here the darker background in the print and the matching darker bottom create a column of color, minimizing and creating a slimmer look.

Power of Prints For b Body Shape or Apple

Our goal is to draw attention away from the belly area. So we need to make sure we put our prints in strategic areas. The most important detail for b Body Shape women is that the swimsuit should not be too tight in the belly area. Size up or look for styles such as tankinis that are flowier and longer.

Placing prints on the bottom helps draw the eye down away from belly area — b Body Types can enjoy printed bottoms. Here a darker top minimizes the belly area and a printed bottom draws attention down.

Power of Prints- The eye does not know where to go so it does not focus on one area. — For a summer dress or a swim dress, prints can help minimize. Here the eye does not know where to go. The cut of the swim dress brings the eyes UP and away from the belly.

Power Of Prints- For b Shape it is important that the swimsuit is not too tight around the belly area. This flowy printed top is a great choice. — b Body Shape needs to make sure that the top is NOT too tight over the belly area. No belly bulges. Look for a printed top that is flowy.

Power Of Prints For An O Body Shape

An O Body Shape is someone who is “Overly Endowed” so the goal is to draw attention away from the bust line. Strategically selected prints will do the job perfectly. Prints can minimize or maximize, the eye doesn’t really know where to focus.

Power of Prints- Stripes going in multiple directions can give a slimming effect — Stripes going in different directions. For O Body Shape you do not want horizontal stripes on the chest area.

Power Of Prints- Tie Dyed print can help minimize a women who is a O Body Shape. The eye doesn't know where to go — This print is great for O Body Type. The eye does not know where to go so it doesn’t focus on one area.

This top is a great selection for a women who is an O/b Body Shape. Minimizing print with blouson top and solid bottom — The most important thing to think about for O Body Types is support. Make sure you have good support in the bra area. Also, make sure the bathing suit is not too tight, go up a size. Many O Body Types also struggle in the belly area, so a blouson style suit with print will work very well.

Other great selection for an O/b Body Type. Animal print to minimize and wrap top to create a waist. — Another option for O Body Type is the swim dress. Make sure you have good support up top. The print draws the eye all over and the ruching on the side helps define the waist.

Power Of Prints X Body Shape And Curvy

For the most part, X Body Shape and Curvy gals can wear whatever print they want but continue to emphasize the waist area, showing off their hourglass shape. But if they do have a “challenge area” they can use prints strategically. Here are some examples from Miraclesuit.

Pattern changes, patterns in different directions, color changes, and ruching to create a slimming effect that emphasizes her hourglass or X Body Shape.

Know Your Challenge Areas!

Tips For Wearing White Jeans

Hello, Darlings! It is Spring Time and that means it is time to pull out white jeans. So today I am going to give you some Tips For Wearing White Jeans. White jeans can be hard to wear for Pear or d Body Shape (those whose challenge area is the bottom, hips, and thighs). The reason is that white is the #1 color on the Color Attractiveness Scale, which means your eyes are drawn to white first before any other color.

As Pears/d Body Shape our goal is to draw attention away from hips and thighs and towards our face. So in order to create balance, we have to work a little bit harder ( or more strategic) when wearing white jeans

Be Picky In Selecting White Jeans

Your white jeans need to fit you comfortably, with plenty of stretch. But, the material can not be too thin or it will show every lump and bump you have on your bottoms, hips, and thighs. For Pears/d Body Shape, look for white jeans that are boot cut or slightly flared for the best look. Apple/b Body Shape can wear slim-cut white jeans and thick white leggings.

Tip For Wearing White Jeans- Wear Nude Underwear!

As much as you try to find white jeans that are thick enough to not show lumps and bumps if they have any stretch they are going to be thinner. So make sure you wear shapewear/underwear that is nude, taupe, or sand color, and not white or black.

What Tops To Wear With White Jeans

Spring is here so pull out your favorite POP colors to wear with your white jeans. For Pears/d Body Shape you need to have an interesting neckline or even a print that has some white in it to help balance the white jeans. I like to wear a faux wrap top and use a sports bra for a camisole, letting some of the white show thru and helping to bring attention UP to my face. For Apple/b Body Shape, look for longer tops with some swing.

Shoe selection is important, especially if you are petite and want to look taller. White tennis shoes are on trend this year with white jeans. You can also wear nude, taupe color shoes, or metallics- pewter, bronze, or silver. If you are an Apple/b Body Shape and want to draw attention UP and DOWN, away from the belly area, you can wear any color/prints you would like. It is all about your body type and challenge areas.

A good question to ask is “Where Does The Eye Go?” and do I want it to be a feature? Hourglass or X Body Shapes want the eye to go all over so colorful shoes can be a great tool in helping to create balance.

White sneakers are “on trend” this season. Many do not have any support and can be uncomfortable. Look to your comfort brands for white sneakers.

For nude/white/ and metallics check out natural details such as woven, rope, and cork for an updated look. Wedges and platforms are good for style and comfort. For me, comfort is #1 on the list.

Creating Columns Of Color With White Jeans

A Column Of Color is a great tool for creating the illusion of a slimmer figure. There are two types- Inner and Outer. To create an Inner Column Of Color, wear a white top or printed top with white background with your white jeans. Then add a layering piece such as a cardigan in a different color. Column Of Color- Create Inner Column Of Color for a slimmer look with white jeans — This is an example of an Inner Column Of Color. White tank top with white jeans and I added a Sapphire Blue Jacket as a layering piece.

Here I have created an Outer Column Of Color with the white denim shorts and white cardigan. The white earrings draw additional attention UP to my face.

Shop For White Layering Pieces

Layering pieces can be jackets, cardigans, or even vests. Make sure you pay attention to details such as buttons and pockets. I look for jackets and cardigans with very few details and straight lines. Also, make sure that the items do not hit at your widest point. Pushing up the sleeves to 3/4 length also is more flattering to all body types.

Shop Your Closet First!

As always before you go and buy, shop your closet first. You may be surprised at how many of these items you already have in your wardrobe. Also, a great cleaning tip for white jeans is to soak them in Oxiclean to help get them clean and stay bright, do not wash them with other colored items. I do not bleach them because the bleach can pull out the white dye leaving them dingy.

Hello, Darlings! Today I am going to show you my Spring Shopping! I have been very intentional with my purchases. After purging my closet, I have a list of things to shop for. My list is not too long because many of the items in my wardrobe are in good repair and fit me well.

Spring Shopping- Updating My Luggage

I do not go on many trips and most of my luggage is in good repair, but my weekend bag was out of date and in poor condition. My old weekend duffle was a patterned Vera Bradley bag and I wanted something different. I fell in LOVE with the Oliver Thomas line of luggage.

Spring Shopping - New weekender bag from Oliver Thomas — The 24 + 7 Weekender Duffle is the perfect size for my weekend trips to the beach or the lake. This bag comes in many colors and some metallics

What is great about this line is that you can get matching cosmetics and soft train cases. I decided to go with metallic for my accessories. The cosmetics case is lined in plastic so it is easy to clean if you have a spill or leak. The train case has a top compartment for jewelry and/or makeup brushes. You could use the train case for cosmetics too, but I have both.

Spring Shopping From Kettlewell

I really do not have a need for many clothes. My closet is in very good shape. But I got so much wear out of my Rachel Jacket that when they came out with an Electric Blue, I had to treat myself. The color is gorgeous and will go with all my Clear/Winter Seasonal Colors in my wardrobe.

Spring Shopping From Dillards

I will be honest with you, I don’t like shopping online at Dillard’s. They charge for shipping (even if you use their Dillards card unless it is over $100). They also charge for returns ( as much as $10). Not a lot of sales and I can usually get the same items cheaper at Macy’s.

But, I have been looking for a sleeveless black cowl neck top (Kettlewell doesn’t have one). So when I found one in Petites, I decided to pull the trigger and buy from Dillards. Macy’s did not have it in Petite.

Spring Shopping- On my needs list is a black cowl neck top. I purchased this one, Calvin Klein Petite Draped Neck from Dillards — This is a great basic top to have in your wardrobe. It comes in both black and white. The material is a thicker matte jersey that lays nicely.

Spring Shopping From Macy’s

I like shopping from Macy’s online. Great sales and free shipping and free returns if you use your Macy’s card. I usually return Macy’s purchases to my local store for immediate credit. My local Macy’s store has very little stock and most of it is Macy’s Back Stage Line, which is their clearance/bargain merchandise.

Another “basic” in my wardrobe is camisoles. Lightweight and great to wear under cardigans and jackets. I have specifically been looking for Petites so I do not have to have them altered. This one comes in both black and white.

I LOVE my cropped black Cropped Pants From Boston Proper and wanted to add another pair. Mine is still available, but I saw they had Ankle Pants with slit bottom that I decided to buy. I wear my black Ponte knit pants most of the year with a great pair of platform shoes such as my OTBTs.

Spring Shopping – Black Event Dress

With Covid dwindling, many of the events that were canceled during lockdowns and restrictions are being rescheduled. I have a need for a long black event dress. This has been on my list for a couple of years and I have struggled to find the right one. It has to have great shoulder details and material that will stretch.

I came across this dress from Lauren Ralph Lauren, my go-to designer for dresses on Macy’s website. It is the Off The Shoulder Matte Jersey Long Black Dress. I would call it almost a portrait collar neckline with ruching details at the waist and slit. It does not come in Petite so I will have to have it hemmed. The dress also comes in navy. I did size down from my normal size, I have lost some weight but the smaller size fits better in the underarm area.

Sweatshirts From Athleta

Spring Shopping- Needs list included colorful lightweight sweatshirt. I found this one at Athleta in Santorini Blue. — Athleta’s sweatshirts are sooo soft. This color, Santorini Blue is gorgeous. I size down in **Athleta’s sweatshirts.** These sweatshirts come in Regular, Petite, and Tall and come in about 19 colors.

The Athleta sweatshirts are very lightweight, so soft material that I can easily slip on for loungewear all year round. It is hard to find bright and bold colors, most are soft and muted. So when I see a bright, bold color I grab it up. Just after Christmas, I was able to get a fuchsia color sweatshirt, unfortunately, it is no longer available. This Santorini Blue is still available and is 20% off.

Spring Shopping – Swimsuits From Lands End

Several of my swims suits look very faded. The saltwater in my pool at the beach seems to be pulling the color out of them after a season. So I needed to find some more as I live in swimsuits during the summer months. Lands End is my favorite shop for swimsuits. I love the quality and fit.

Needing to replace some faded out bathing suits, I found this tankini top with removable straps at Land's End — This tankini has front ruching that is flattering and helps to conceal the tummy area. The top has removable straps.

I decided to also try this Square Neck Halter Tankini Top from Land's End — This tankini has front ruching with a square neckline. Very flattering! It comes in black and a Baltic Teal. Wish it came in Navy.

Love the higher waisted bikini bottoms from Land's End — Great high-waisted bottoms.

Spring Shopping- Beach Sarong

I feel a little “exposed” walking on the beach in just a bathing suit. I do have some coverups but I have been looking for a sarong that I liked. So when I saw this on Boston Proper’s website I decided to give it a go. LOVE the zebra print and this will go so well with my black bathing suit. They also have this same print in a tankini, high-waisted bottoms, and skirted bottoms.

Shopping With Intent!

I am very pleased with the way my wardrobe is shaping up. I continue to edit as I lose weight and get more comfortable with my personal style. When you shop, laser-focused you can easily disregard most of the items on a retailer’s website and only focus on those that meet your needs. Before you shop, make use you know the following:

Is it in my BEST colors
Does it follow my Body Type Rules
Does it work with my Personal Style
Can I list at least 3 times I will wear it and does it work with my Current Lifestyle

Just as you do when you go to the grocery store, make a list of those items you are shopping for this season. It may be a few items that are “trends” that you want to update your spring wardrobe. Or it may be some of the “holes” that you need to fill in your wardrobe so you can easily create outfits for any occasion.

Choosing A Print- Think Level Of Contrast

Hello, Darlings! Part 2 in my series on prints, today’s topic is Choosing A Print- Think Level Of Contrast. Are you drawn towards certain prints and find that for some reason they don’t work on you? I have had this problem and have made many mistakes that end up being unworn clothing just taking up real estate in my closet.

Choosing A Print- Think Level Of Contrast

First- Know Your Dominant Color Code

Some people know what colors look good on them. Many have even been color analyzed in a tonal or seasonal color system. I have learned that even though I have been seasonal analyzed as a Winter, not all the Winter colors work for me. So I have gone to a more Dominant Color Code, focusing on the one tonal color code that works best or is the strongest.

Using the Dominant Color Code System, you must look at hair, skin, and eyes. Hair is important because it is such a feature. Many women change their hair coloring, so your Dominant Color Code can change, especially if you go gray.

Chosing A Print- Think Level Of Contrast

Below is a list of the Dominant Color Codes and their level of contrast. Use this guide to help you in selecting a print that will work for your coloring.

Using Dominant Color Code To Chose Prints

Light Color Code– Light blonde hair with fair skin, usually light eyes. Can be brown hair with very fair skin. Pastels look amazing. Chose prints with medium to high contrast
Deep Color Code– Dark hair, medium skin tone, dark eyes. Jewel tones colors are their go-to. Low to medium contrast prints will work the best
Cool Color Code– Gray, silver, and “salt & pepper” ladies ROCK this color code. Look at this color code is you have been seasonal analyzed as a Summer. You look amazing in blues, pinks, and purples. Can wear medium to high contrast prints.
Warm Color Code– Red heads, strawberry blondes, and ladies with golden red highlights. Eye color and skin tones can vary. All the colors in the spice rack look amazing on her. Low to medium contrast in prints. If you have been seasonally analyzied as an Autumn, this may be your code
Soft Color Code-Medium color blondes or light to medium brown hair. Skin tone is light to medium, and eyes are the same. Very soft, gentle, and mellow colors will make you look amazing. Lots of colors to choose from, it is all about the intensity. Low contrast prints accentuate a Soft Color Code’s beauty.
Clear Color Code– Think “Snow White”! Dark hair with light color skin. African women with very dark hair and skin will also fall into the Clear Color Code because they need to contrast. High contrast prints look FABULOUS on these ladies.

Head To Toe Approach To Dressing

The idea is to mimic the amount of contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes down onto your clothing. If your color code has a higher contrast, you will want to choose a print that is high contrast. The reverse is true for someone who is a Soft Color Code, choose a print that is more muted or softer.

Dominant Light- Look For Medium To High Contrast Print

Choosing A Print-Right now it is easy to find tops in the Light Color Code. Beautiful pastel colors with white will go so well with white pants for a crisp, fresh look for sprint and summer — Right now it is easy to find tops in the Light Color Code. Dominant Deep- Look For Medium To Low Contrast Print

Choosing A Print-For the Deep Color Code, black background with prints in jewel-tone colors will be an easy find. This print is more Deep than Clear due to the amount of contrast. This top is a great example of bold jewel tone blues but with lower contrast. Deeps will love prints that have almost a watercolor or abstract feel.

Dominant Cool – Choose A Print With Medium To High Contrast

Dominant Warm-Look For Prints That Are Low To Medium Contrast

Warmer colors for Springtime can be hard to find. But this top is a great example of the Warm Color Code. A more muted floral in an array of spice colors

Dominant Soft- Look For Prints That Are More Muted With Low Contrast

Soft prints can have multiple colors in the Soft Color Code. More colors more muted the print, and the softer the feel.

Dominant Clear- You Need High Contrast Prints

When looking for prints for someone who is Dominant Clear, the easiest prints are those with a background of white, black, or navy.

So Petite Dominant Clear Code women may struggle to find prints that work for their body s — Black and white prints are the easiest to find for Clears. Everyone Has An Animal Print

Everyone has an animal print, but not all animal prints look best on everyone. Your “best” animal print will be determined by your Dominant Color Code.

Zebra Print or Black/White stripes are great print choices for Clear Color Code

Color Rules When Choosing Prints

A good “Rule Of Thumb” when choosing a print is that the majority of the colors need to be in your color code. The background color must be in your color code. The more colors in a print, the less contrast. Many prints can be worn for multiple color codes. Also, you may not have a “dominant” color code and can wear multiple. For example, if you were color analyzed as a Winter, you may be able to wear cool, clear, and deep colors.

Choosing A Print- This print does NOT work for me. The background is NOT in my Clear Color Code. It is too soft and does not have enough contrast. Also, the top does not fit well and needs to be altered. It was put in the sell pile and I sold it on Treds Up. — This print does NOT work for me. The background is NOT in my Clear Color Code. Another top that did not work. First, the colors are NOT in my Winter Seasonal Palette or my Dominant Clear Color Code. I love Lilly Pulitzer prints but most do not work for me. This print was also muted due to the multiple colors and patterns.

I love a Kimono, but this one did not work for me. The reason is that the colors in my kimono are too muted and mostly dominate Cool. Plus the pattern is too large and does not work with my STAR STYLE. This kimono will look amazing on someone who is taller.

This is where it is good to experiment, try on different pieces, take a selfie and analyze. Decide why or why not something is working for you. It may be personal preference or you may realize you do favor one color code over another. Make sure you put together the outfit in totality- including makeup and accessories. Seeing the “whole” pictures really help to understand better.

Don’t Forget Body Type Rules When Choosing Prints

This is when you want to look at necklines and other details such as sleeve length, buttons, and gatherings. Also style and length of the shirt. For example, someone who is a b Body Shape or Apple will want a top that is longer and covers their belly. While someone who is a d Body Shape or Pear wants to make sure the top stops before the widest part of their body, usually the hips.

Choosing A Print-Here is a great example of a top I can wear with all my Clear Color Code pieces and most Winter Seasonal Color Palette items. It is important that the tops are NOT too small. Ladies, no one will know your size unless you tell them! Plus, manufacturers sizing is all over the place. So, get a top that fits properly or be prepared to alter. If it doesn’t fit and you will not alter- DO NOT BUY!!!!

Choosing A Print- Remember STAR STYLE

No wonder prints are so hard. So much to think about and so much to take into consideration. But if you get it right, your prints should be able to go with many of the items in your closet (because they are in your color code). So mixing and matching will be a breeze. Hello, Darlings! Today’s topic is Picking Out Prints Using Star Style. Prints are hard. I have struggled with prints for years, but I have been taking a class on fashion and have a new perspective when choosing prints. But first, you need to learn your STAR STYLE.

We talk a lot about body types when discussing fashion, but that is only one part of the puzzle. Color is another part, but proportion is the third. When I talk about proportion, I am referring to your height and weight. As a petite person ( 5’1) I have always struggled with proportion, but now I have a better understanding after learning my STAR STYLE

If you are under 5’3 you are a GLAMOUR GIRL
If you are 5’3 to 5’7 you are a MOVIE STAR
5’8 and taller you are a ROCK STAR

I love the STAR STYLE because it is positive and reminds us that everyone is a star, we just need to learn how to dress our “Star Style”.

How To Dress A GLAMOUR GIRL

A GLAMOUR GIRL is petite, under 5’3 so proportion is very important. Large oversized prints will make you look even smaller. The same with oversized handbags and jewelry. A GLAMOUR GIRL needs to select prints that are on a smaller scale.

Star Style- smaller prints work best on a GLAMOUR GIRL — This top from the Loft is a small-scale print and would work on a GLAMOUR GIRL. This muted multi-colored modern floral will work best on someone with a color code that is Soft.

If you are 5’3 to 5’7 you can wear prints that are medium in size. The same with handbags and jewelry. Don’t go too small or dainty or it will look out of proportion. Large or oversized print, handbags, and jewelry can make you look heavy and out of proportion.

Dressing STAR STYLE takes into account not just height but weight too. So if you are NOT at your ideal weight you can move up a category.

GLAMOUR GIRLS who are not 0-4 can move up to MOVIE STAR category
MOVIE STARS who are not size 6-8 can move up to ROCK STARS
ROCK STARS can wear large scale or oversized prints but may move down to MOVIE STAR if they are size 10 or smaller.

You don’t have to move up a category, but can if you so choose. You have options. Experiment with size and proportion to find what is right for you.

Still Need To Know And Understand Your Body Type

You will still need to take into consideration those “Body Type Rules” when selecting a print top or bottom. As a Pear or d Body Type, I do not need to wear prints on the bottom half of my body. Too much attention is drawn to my “challenge areas”. But I can wear printed tops, scarves, and layering pieces with style.

Analyzing Prints For STAR STYLE

I have struggled with prints, especially selecting tops from the Petite section. Now I know why! Because even though I am technically a GLAMOUR GIRL, I am not at my ideal weight, and wearing too small of prints makes me look larger- EEEK! So when selecting a print for a top, scarf, or layering piece I look for more medium-size prints to make me look more balanced and in proportion.

Retail Therapy is REAL. Shopping for new items can create a dopamine release giving you the feeling of happiness.

This is why Retail Therapy often gives a quick dopamine hit. Feels good to buy something new. But you can increase your dopamine levels by getting enough sleep, exercising, sitting in the sun, yoga, or just listening to music.

Spring Trends For 2022

Hello, Darlings! Today we are talking Spring Trends For 2022. Trends come and go, and many of these trends may not work with your body type or personal style. But it is fun to be aware of what is out in the marketplace.

Before you go out and buy this season, SHOP YOUR CLOSET! Many of these trends have been trends in the past. I have several of these that I consider classic pieces in my wardrobe.

Spring Trends For 2022

Stripes Are EVERYWHERE

Because of my need for contrast, I like a good stripe. This is a trend I am going to be watching and potentially adding something new to my wardrobe. I am looking for a pure white/black stripe T-shirt this season.

Animal Prints Are Still HOT

Animal prints are almost a classic in the wardrobe. An all-year-long style, you can find them in color or classic neutral colors. My best animal print is the bold black/white zebra. I have added a short zebra print scarf this year.

Spring Trend 2022- Zebra is still so HOT. Lots of zebra print out in the market place. — SHOP MY CLOSET- I love a shell/tank top/camisole to add prints to an outfit. This zebra stripe has become a favorite because it goes with all my bold Winter colors.

Gingham For Fresh Youthful Look

Stores such as Talbots and Draper James are going to be full of gingham this season. This particular trend does not work well with my personal style so I don’t have any in my wardrobe. It is a little too “Cute Classic” for me. But if it is a trend you gravitate to, you should have lots to choose from this season.

Polka Dots Are BACK

I really don’t think they ever left. Considered a classic look, you will find lots to choose from this spring. For some reason, I do not wear them well, even if it is high-contrast polka dot. This again goes to personal style. If it doesn’t work for you, you don’t have to wear it, even if it is a hot trend.

Tie Dye Is Still In Style

Tie Dye trend was super hot last summer with big bold colors. This year you will see the trend again, but it will be softer, more muted, beach style.

Crochet For Touch Of Nostagia

When I found this duster I almost broke out in tears. It immediately reminded me of the many quilts my grandmother used to make. For Spring/Summer Crochet is still trending with sweaters, handbags, and totes. You might even find it with additional fringe detailing.

Spring Trend 2022- Return Of Denim Skirts

Denim skirts have been around but this year you are going to be seeing them in a longer midi style, two-toned denim, pencil skirts, and minis with frayed hems. Personally, I don’t think this is a trend I will be trying as the midi length does not look good on me due to my height.

Trends In Denim Jeans

You are going to see several trends in denim jeans this season. One of the is Crafty Jeans, jeans with patches, painted embellishments. This is NOT a trend I will be trying because it draws too much attention to my bottom. Also, low-rise and super flared jeans are making a comeback. (insert sad face)

Dark denim and white denim are still on-trend and if that is on your shopping list you should be able to find a good selection. Skinny jeans are going out and ankle, cropped, kick flared jeans are going to be plentiful. Distressed jeans are still on-trend, mostly frayed hemlines.

Very Peri- Many Shades Of Purple

With Very Peri, a periwinkle purple/blue color being the Pantone color of the year, purple is going to be everywhere. Last year I added several purple pieces to my wardrobe and really loved them.

Hoping To Find Lots Of Fresh Green

Is Green going to have a moment. I am waiting to see what I can find in this bold and fresh color this season. — I only have a few items in my wardrobe in the color green. Hoping to add more with the launch of the Kettlewell Colours Spring Collection next week. The color is so bright and fresh.

Green is trending in home decor and I am hoping to see more of it in fashion. Adding more Green to my wardrobe is high on my shopping list.

SHOP YOUR CLOSET First!

Before you buy anything this season, SHOP YOUR CLOSET. Make a list of any holes you have in your wardrobe. Try on clothes for the fit and start to create outfits that can make the transition into Spring. Take the time to organize your closet so you can easily see what you already have. I still believe we will continue to see inventory issue so being able to quickly grab any item you may need will be key.

I am working on my personal shopping list for Spring. It is not very long at all as I have really worked to pair down my wardrobe and concentrate on only those items that look good on my body type, in my best colors, and work with my personal style.
