Preparing To Be First Time Grandparent

Today’s Topic is Preparing To Be First Time Grandparent. I am going to be a Mimi! My tennis gals told me years ago that it is best that I pick out my “grandmother name” early on, even before my first grandchild arrives. So I have been Mimi to my granddogs for years, but now I have a new granddaughter due at the end of October. Oh, and Dan is going to be… Daddy Dan.

Preparing To Be First Time Grandparent

We are so excited for my son, Matt, and his wife, Emily on the impending arrival of their first child, a daughter, Leighton Anne. After the news that I was going to be a Mimi to my first grandchild, I started thinking about some of the changes I needed to make to be prepared. As a matter of fact, it was the news that we were getting a grandchild that prompted my husband, Dan to go ahead and have his hip replacement surgery this summer. He wants to be healthy and able to get down on the ground and play.

Matt and Emily gave me this great insulated tumbler with my “grandmother name”, Mimi on it when they told us the good news.

Time For A Baby Shower!

My sister-in-law, Sheri, so graciously offered to host a baby shower for Emily. Sheri has an amazing house and we were thrilled to have her as a hostess. The ladies in my family outdid themselves to create a beautiful Sunday afternoon that we could celebrate and shower Matt and Emily with gifts for the new baby.

Not games, just time to relax and enjoy spending time with guest
The two hours went by fast and it was a great opportunity to share words of wisdom with the mother-to-be.
Presents are opened by hostesses and displayed for guest to see
Birmingham is famous for its “Tea Style” parties for bridal and baby showers. Held on a Sunday afternoon from 2-4, it is a come-and-go affair. Guests enjoy mingling, fabulous food, and talking with friends.
Hostesses open gift while mom to be is enjoying spending time with her friends and family. Each gift is carefully recorded so thank you notes can be written
The hostesses open all the presents and display them for the guest to look at, carefully making a list so that Emily can write thank you cards. The mother-to-be can just rest and enjoy her guest, with no awkward moments playing games or opening gifts. Don’t worry, many gifts were delivered ahead of the shower to their home, and they had lots of opportunities to open presents.

At the end of the afternoon, everyone had a wonderful time getting the opportunity to visit with family and friends. So many baby gifts were brought to the shower, but many more were sent ahead of time. I love how they now have baby registries that the new parents can register for what they need/want from many different stores. So helpful in getting just what they need. After the shower was over, Matt came by and loaded his SUV up with presents for the baby, I don’t know where they are going to put everything.

Next On The List- Preparing A Grands Room

I wanted to have a space for the new baby and other grandchildren to come. Some place they can sleep when they come to “Mimi’s House”. But, after Baby Shower Weekend, I realized that I still needed to have another bedroom for guests. So, with the help of my daughter Anna, we created a multi-generational bedroom.

What is a Multi-Generational Bedroom Look Like?

Part guest room/part bedroom for my new grandchildren is the goal. Before we started the room was a junk room, full of furniture that was dumped from the kids’ college apartments. So cleaning out the room was first priority. After that, a plan was made.

The goal was that this room not be “too baby or kiddie” so that I could not use it as a second guest room. I already have a fabulous guest bedroom/suite (check out my post here). Also, this new Grands Room will not be a playroom, it will be only for sleeping (nighttime or napping). I have another space that is designated as a playroom.

Grands Room- Start With A Plan

First I made an emergency call to my favorite online e-designer, Anna at Homzie Designs (she is my daughter). My dilemma is that I need another guest bedroom for the weekend that I could use for my grandchildren too. Quickly we came up with a plan, and I started by shopping what I already had and some of the extras from Anna’s house.

Preparing To Be First Time Grandparent- Creating a multi-generation guest room.
  • Headboard (shopped from Anna’s house)
  • Lamps from Target (out of stock)
  • White Quilt/Pillows From Target’s Casaluna line
  • Duvet Cover From Casaluna in Natural
  • My Favorite Sheets in white from Amazon

Preparing Grands Room- A Wall Of Books

Because I did not want this room to be too “kiddie or baby” I decided only to add a few touches to make this room soft and cozy. This room’s main purpose is sleep, whether it is night or nap time. So my touches, I added a wall of some of my children’s favorite books, easily accessible on an acrylic shelf.

Preparing Grands Room- A Bed Full Of Lovies

Waiting for my grandchildren to visit is a bed full of Lovies. These are some of the softest stuffed animals on the market. I can vision the grands giving them names and making up stories about them. But mostly snuggling down with them as they spend the weekend at Mimi’s House.

Creating A Guest & Grands Room- A Bed Full of Soft Stuffed Animals ready to by snuggled
The softest stuffed animals (we call them “Lovies”) await my grands.

I can take off the stuffed animals and store them easily if I have adult company that needs the guest room. For now, they are ready and waiting to be loved on

  • Teddy Bear
  • Monkey
  • Jelly Cat Schnauzer
  • Jelly Cat Bashful Bunny
  • Warmie, Microwave Tiger

Weekend Paint Project- Preparing Grands Room

Wanting to use old furniture, I decided to paint a dresser and chest of drawers that was in one of the twin rooms. Now, it is very important to note that I am not a crafty person and painting is not my forte. But painting these furniture pieces transformed the room, from a darker masculine room to a lighter slightly feminine but definitely brighter room.

Preparing To Be First Time Grandparent- Reusing furniture by painting
I did not get this completed for Baby Shower Weekend, but the next weekend my project was to reuse the old furniture that was in the boy’s room. I painted it white using chalk paint. This paint is a part primer/part chalk paint. By using this product I did not need to sand or prime, which made the task so much easier.
Krylon Chalky Finish Paint in Ultra Matte White
I am not very “crafty” so I found this product easy to use, Krylon Chalky Finish Paint in Ultra White, purchased from Lowes My furniture soaked up the paint so it took several coats to get the look I wanted. I watched several youtube videos to get the technique right and have the proper supplies.
Crystal Knobs were added to drawer to change the look
Removed the old knobs and added these Crystal Clear Arcylic Drawer Knobs from Amazon
Finished project included a coat of wax to give the look of an antique piece
The mirror is the Naturalist Mirror from Pottery Barn Kids. I will be changing out the chair for a rocker/swivel style (waiting for it to go on sale)
Finished Chest of Drawers with crystal knobs
After using the Chalk Paint to paint the chest of drawers, I gave it a final coat of wax, Krylon Chalky Finish Sealing Wax. This gives the piece almost an antique look and protects it.

Preparing For Grands- Not Over Buying

After talking with other grandmothers, I decide not to put a crib in the bedroom. Instead, I will be using a Pack N Go Crib. This will work for when the grandchildren are babies/toddlers, then the “big bed” will be the favorite spot (with all the stuffed animals to love on), adding a stepping stool.

Decided against traditional crib, will use a Pack N Go Crib and store it under the bed when not in use
The Graco Pack and Play will take us from baby to toddler for all the grandchildren. Easy to set up and take down, storing under the bed for when it is needed.

Officially On Baby Watch!

We are one week til the “Due Date” so we are officially on Baby Watch! I am down at the beach this week, enjoying the gorgeous fall weather. I have bought an extra Pack And Play to have here at the beach for when they visit. Our first official beach trip with our new granddaughter will be after the Christmas holidays. Trying not to go crazy buying all the cute clothes and toys. Can’t wait to show my new granddaughter all the wonders of the beach.

Lifestyle Clothing By IBKUL

Hello, Darlings! Today’s topic is Lifestyle Clothing- IBKUL. I live in the South where we have hot weather until November. Sun protection is a concern and many retailers have embraced the newer fabrics which incorporated SPF protection. I have found that I live in these fabrics because they are lightweight and I can wear them almost all year round.

While many people are shopping for fall sweaters and cardigans, I am looking at lifestyle clothing. With my more casual retirement lifestyle, I have a need for more comfortable everyday wear. The weather is a huge issue because where I live it rarely gets cold. As a matter of fact, the coldest month is August/September when the A/C units are cranked up inside.

Evaluating Your Lifestyle- What Is Lifestyle Clothing?

As I have been going thru this fashion journey, I did a great job of discovering my best colors and understanding my body type. But, I still struggle with embracing clothing that reflects my “true” lifestyle. I have been working hard to stop buying clothes for a lifestyle I do not live. My true lifestyle is made up of my love for tennis, a more casual retirement lifestyle that includes traveling and enjoying my vacation home at the beach. I only need “dressier” clothing for some social functions, date nights, and church. Even church has become so much casual, maybe even too casual.

The “Real” me, no makeup, just sunscreen. Enjoying retirement life in casual lifestyle clothing. My daily uniform is black knit yoga-style bootcut pants or shorts with an IBKUL long-sleeve top. This weekend for our trip to the mountains, I packed several of them and wore them the entire time. For those cooler mornings, I just added a fleece vest that I could easily take off later in the day. Underneath I did have a sleeveless tank with a bra shelf(no bra, just used my nipple covers), so I could take off the IBKUL top if it got hotter during the day. But these tops are “cooling” tops so I did not need to do that.

So this year I have been exploring more brands that incorporate sports fabrics that I can wear for everyday living. I have recently found IBKUL, a company that specializes in moisture-wicking, cooling fabrics with sun protection. IBKUL has many tops with simple classic lines in prints and solid colors for men, women, and children.

No makeup and damp hair (just went behind the waterfall). Not a sweatshirt gal, so these IBKUL long sleeve mock-neck tops work for me. They give me that POP of color I love and are super comfortable and lightweight. This waterfall is Dry Falls just outside of Highlands NC. We enjoyed a week of hiking and discovering waterfalls, and the start of the fall color. Daytime temps were in the mid ’60s during the day.

My Favorite IBKUL Top-Long Sleeve Mock Neck Top

This top comes in 17 different colors and I have 8 of them. I wear this top as an everyday top with black shorts or black yoga-style pants. These tops give me the “POP” of color that I crave, but have the comfort factor that I need. Several of the tops have a netted panel under the arms for a higher cooling factor. Again, due to my climate, keeping cool is important most of the year. In the winter I can add a vest for warmth if needed.

Buy IBKUL Long Sleeve Tops From Amazon- Prime Shipping And Free Returns

IBKUL lifestyle clothing - long sleeve mock neck top
I have a collection of different colors in the Long Sleeve Mock Neck top. Love the lightweight feel of it and wear it almost every day. I can wear it in the cooler winter months for tennis. The bold colors and classic lines fit well with my personal style.
This top comes in as many as 17 different colors, more are available on the ibkul.com website. It is a modern fit, so I size up for more comfort.

Helpful hint! Amazon sells “some” IBKUL tops with Prime Shipping and Free Returns. IBKUL’s website has free shipping for over $100 but has more options. Anthony’s of Florida offers free shipping for over $75. You can also purchase thru Walmart.com and Dicks Sporting. Note- if you purchase from Walmart, you can NOT return to the store.

Lifestyle Clothing- Loving Prints

I have always struggled with prints. This year I have found 2 prints from IBKUL that work with my style. I need contrast and prints that are more abstract in design. But the prints need to be in my best colors. So many requirements make finding prints that I will wear, hard. These are two that I have bought, and both have already been worn many times

IBKUL also has prints. My new favorite for fall is this bold camo print
I recently added this Camo Print Long Sleeve to my collection. Bold camo print in my Clear/Winter colors. It also comes in a grey/black color combo.
Anthony's of Florida carries this IBKUL print and is on sale
Anthony’s of Florida sometimes gets some prints that are not available on IBKUL’s website. I grabbed this top the other day. LOVE the colors with the white background. It is also on sale! FYI, the colors are more intense than this picture shows.

Lifestyle Clothing- All About The Fabric

IBKUL’s selling/marketing point is that their product has a special fabric that helps cool the body. Their patented Iceƒil technology converts your own sweat to lower your temperature by up to five degrees. The long sleeve tops have mesh underarm panels giving you extra style, reach, and breathability. Moisture-wicking, UPF 50+ fabric keeps you dry and protected from both UVA/UVB rays.

IBKUL LIfestyle Clothing is made with Icefil technology fabrics designed to keep your body cooler

For those who must cover their arms during the summer months, these tops will keep you cooler than other brands. The under-the-arm mesh panel allows for better airflow and makes the tops lighter, thus more comfortable.

What To Do In Colder Months

My weather does not get very cold. Most of our colder days will be in the 50s. If I need to, I will add a vest as a layering piece on top of my IBKUL tops. This is especially true when I play tennis in the winter. IBKUL does carry vests, I have not tried them and prefer to just use my fleece ones.

What Do I Wear For Bottoms

IBKUL was originally created as a line of clothing for golfers. So it is meant to be worn as lifestyle/sportswear/athleisure. I wear my IBKUL tops with my black yoga-style pants, shorts, skorts, or tennis/golf/pickleball skirts. For shoes, I wear my casual sneakers, tennis shoes, or occasionally sandals.

Lifestyle Clothing For Men- IBKUL Has Men’s Clothing

My love for IBKUL tops has rubbed off on my husband. This year we have been building him a collection of the IBKUL long-sleeve tops. He pairs them with his LuLuLemon ABC Classic pants and shorts for daily lifestyle clothing.

IBKUL Lifestyle Clothing also has a limited collection of men's clothing including the mock neck longs sleeve top
Anthony’s of Florida does not carry the men’s line. Right now the long sleeve top only comes in solids and one print.
Long sleeve men's tops is a modern fit that is true to size and comes in 9 colors
Men’s Long Sleeve top comes in 9 colors, same cooling fabric, and mesh under arm panels. It is a modern, slimmer fit, but runs true to size.
Men's collection only has one print, the Space Dye Mini Grid Waffle print but it comes in 5 colors
Only one print style in the men’s line but it comes in 5 colors. The royal one is my husband’s favorite.

Note- Amazon offers the men’s tops for $5.99 shipping and free returns.

IBKUL Carries Short Sleeve And Sleeveless Tops

I only have the long sleeve tops, but IBKUL does carry short sleeve, sleeveless tops, long/short sleeve dresses, and a jacket in the women’s line. In the men’s line, they have a short-sleeve “golf shirt”, long and short-sleeve t-shirts, and jogger pants all in the Icefil technology fabric. You can find solid and print long-sleeve tops for girls too.

IBKUL and Anthony’s of Florida will occasionally put a print on sale or run a site-wide sale, usually around holidays.

Fall Trends- Hit Or Miss

Hello, Darlings! Today’s Topic is Fall Trends- Hit Or Miss. I took the summer off from blogging to take care of home life. My husband had hip replacement surgery and although he did great, I needed to concentrate on his care. So basically, I have been homebound for most of the summer.

But as we are heading into fall, it is time to start thinking about fall fashions. The weather here is hot and humid (very, very humid) so “Sweater Weather” is still a couple of months away. I will use this time to do a closet check so I will be ready when the weather turns cooler.

Fall Trends – Hit Or Miss

Fall Trends 2022- Hit Or Miss

Not All Trends Will Work And That Is OKAY!

I have never been a “trend chaser” but trends will dictate what is in the stores. Making small changes and additions to your wardrobe can help you from looking outdated and out of style. Also, knowing and accepting what trends will work with your body type and personal style will help you from wasting money on clothes that will never work or you will not wear. SHOP SMART!

Color Trends For Fall

You can count on fall color trends to be filled with harvest colors. But some years the powers to be will throw in some bolder and brighter colors to play with. Color trends are set months if not a year in advance so retailers can plan their purchases. Not all of these colors will work for you, but it is fun to look in the stores and find these colors on the racks.

Pantone colors for Fall/Winter 2022
Look for these punches of color for fall. I am seeing so much FUCHSIA!!!! It is exciting. This summer the ice pink and lemon yellow was everywhere.
Deep, rich, and spicy colors from Pantone for Fall/Winter 2022
Here are the “spicy” colors. These are some of the traditional colors of fall. Colors are associated with leaves changing and harvest. I am seeing a lot of Root Beer or Dark Chocolate colors in the stores.
Basic neutrals to add to your wardrobe this Fall
Everyone needs to know their best neutrals. For me, it is Black And Navy. But the neutral palette is large with many great colors to explore.

Top Fall Trends In Denim

Denim is the first place to start when you are building your wardrobe. The good news is that retailers have FINALLY learned that not all of us have the same body type. Now you will find many styles, sizing, and colors, something for everyone. Some years you are going to see more choices in certain styles as they are deemed “trends for fall”. Knowing what denim styles and shapes work with your body is key.

Also, look for denim with elastane for lighter weight and more stretch. The traditional, heavy-weight denim is out. You will also still see colored and distressed denim is still “in-style”, you will not see as much this season.

***Note- if you find a pair of jeans you absolutely LOVE, buy an extra pair. This is especially true with the newer fabrics with elastane. The elastane allows for more stretch, but these fibers break down quicker and your jeans will wear out much faster. Taking special care to wash and not dry will help.

Flares And Wide Legs Are HOT This Season

If you are a skinny jean lover, this is not the year for you. You will still be able to find them, but the stores will be full of flares, wide leg, and stove pipe style jeans and pants. But… this is a great time to try a new style and see how it works. Most body types can wear flares, boot cuts jeans are great on d Body or Pear Shapes. Be careful of the wide leg, stove pipe style. It can make your legs look like tree trunks- YIKES.

Fall Trends- flares and boot cut jeans
My favorite jeans, boot cut not flared. So good for d Body/Pear Body Shape. Comes in both Regular and Petite. Wit And Wisdom AbSolution Itty Bitty Bootcut Jeans from Nordstrom. I have them in Black and Indigo (dark wash)

Going to see a lot of high-rise jeans this fall which is great for helping to hide the tummy. If you are Petite, look for brands that sell specifically Petite sizing and look for inseam numbers to avoid having to hem. Frayed hems are still in style, so if it is too long, grab the scissors and cut them to the correct length, and give them a frayed look. Instyle and save money.

Fall Trends- Wide Stove Pipe Jeans
Wide Leg Jeans in Dark Wash from Ann Taylor in both Petite and Regular sizing

Faux Leather/Leather Pants Are The IT Item Of The Season

Faux leather pants are EVERYWHERE! They are the IT item for Fall 2022. Are you going to try them? For me, maybe..in black. I saw Chicos has a cropped version that I might try. For me, it is a fit and lifestyle issue. As a d Body Shape/Pear, I am going to need room in the derriere. So stretch is important for fit in the bottom and waist. Also, as my Autumn season weather is rather warm and humid, don’t know how I will feel with faux leather bottoms. Finally, do I have enough places to wear them to justify the cost?

Fall Trends- Faux Leather Pants
Faux Leather Crops from Chicos come in Black and Cherry Brunette (dark reddish brown)

If faux leather pants are not for you, try adding a leather jacket or vest to your wardrobe. Leather is an interesting fabric to add to your wardrobe because it gives both warmth and a new texture. True leather can be heavy, so check out some of the “faux” leather options for lighter weight, ease of care, and a lower price point.

Hot Prints For Fall

Prints are usually really big in the fall and this year you will find them everywhere-tops, sweaters, coats, jackets, accessories, and shoes. There is a couple of distinct trends in prints this year- Equestrian, Animal (Especially Zebra), Fall Floral, and Houndstooth. While not designated as a trend this year, plaid is always hot for the fall. Not seeing as many camo prints as in past years, but remember… if you love it.. wear it!

Fall Trends- Zebra Print EVERYWHERE
Zebra is EVERYWHERE this season. It may be too much for you in a top/sweater so try a scarf. Zebra Print Scarf from Ann Taylor. I bought this one on a weekend sale for 70% off (right now it is 30%)
Fall Trends- Fall Florals
Fall Florals in a modern way from Chicos.
Houndstooth is HUGE fall trend this year
Houndstooth is everywhere this fall. In sweaters, purses, scarves, and blankets. This V-Neck Vest is from Talbots.
Equestrian prints and chain details are newest fall trend this season
Equestrian Prints are HOT this fall. You will see them in blouses and scarves. Not really what I would call “Western Wear”, think more Polo match. This scarf is from Amazon.

Trends For Shoes And Accessories

This is an area where you can update your wardrobe and wear one of the new trends without investing a lot of money. But here too, if it doesn’t work for you- It Is OKAY! In all honesty, very few people even know what trends are new. But it is fun to try new things.

Not Your Grandmother’s Pearls

Pearls are HOT this season, especially oversized pearls. The trend is called Pearlcore, and you will see pearls in many colors, multi-layered, mixed with other materials such as chains, and lucite.

Fall Trend- PEARLS. Not your grandmother's pears, but larger statement necklaces with mixed materials

Cuff Bracelets Are BACK

For the past couple of years, stacked multiple beaded bracelets have been the “thing”. This year you are going to see the return of the cuff.

Fall Trend- Cuff Bracelets. This Open Cuff from Chicos is a modern version of the cuff bracelet

Chains Are BACK

Chain details on purses and shoes are back for fall this year. I even saw where you can buy a chain purse strap to change out your current one from Amazon.

Fall Trend- Chains. Chain details on loafers from Vionic
Chain details added to loafers are a hot trend for fall. These are the Mizelle Loafers from Vionic

Chain details added to Cross Body Bag from Chicos
Update your own bag by adding chain details. 4 piece kit from Amazon

Fringe For Fall

Fringe continues to be a trend this Fall in accessories, jewelry, and clothing. Not everyone can wear fringe, especially earrings. Try it out and see if you like it.

Fall Trends- Fringe. Fringe continues to be hot this fall. Fringe earrings from Chicos
Fringe Earrings for Fall from Chicos

Barbie Core- All Things Pink!

With Fuchsia as a HOT color this fall, Barbie Core takes it to a whole new level. Lots of different shades of pink in everything from clothing to accessories and even home decor. I will not be going crazy for the Barbie Core trend, but I will use it as an opportunity to snag some pink items that I had on my wish list.

Fall Trend- Barbie Core, all things Pink! I am loving this fuchsia/pink blazer from Ann Taylor
This Petite Blazer in Razzle Dazzle is the perfect addition to my wardrobe. With tweed and fringe, it is an updated version of the classic blazer in a fabulous POP color. It also comes in Regular size. Great to dress up or dress down with jeans.
Pink trench coat from Ann Taylor is perfect for those who love the Barbie Core trend
I am so tempted by this trench coat! The color is Razzle Dazzle and it comes in both Regular and Petite Sizing.

Trends In Shoes

Trends in shoes this year include the tall boot, animal print flats, loafers with chain details, higher heel ankle boots, and statement sneakers.

Fall Trend- Knee High Riding Boots
Taller Knee High Boots are a big trend this fall. It pairs well with the equestrian style.
Fall Trend In Shoes- Zebra Print is HOT. But you still can find your favorite leopard and cheetah print too.
Zebra print flats are EVERYWHERE. These are from Talbots. Zebra is not your style. Don’t worry, cheetah and leopard prints are still hot, really are considered a classic neutral now.
Fall Trend In Shoes- Chain details. These loafers from Steve Maddon mix animal print and chain detail.
Here are chain details on an animal print flat from Steve Maddon
Fall Trend- Continuing the classic sneaker trend from spring but now in leather. Also seeing statement sneakers in the stores.
Classic sneaker style shoe in leather from Vionic
Booties are still trending, just not as big as in the past.
Don’t worry, booties are style in style! These are some of my favorite as they are waterproof, Blondo Tassel Waterproof Booties from Nordstrom

Before Your Buy- Evaluate!

Before you buy, take some time to do an evaluation. Start with answering a couple of questions. This will save you so much money. Because no matter how HOT the trend is, if you will not wear it, it is throwing money away.

  • Does it work with my body type?
  • What are the BEST colors for my skin and color palette?
  • Does it work with my lifestyle?
  • Will it work with my climate?

No need to buy sweaters or coats if your climate never gets cold (or does for a week only). Knowing your current lifestyle is key, I have no need for dressy or work-related styles of clothing. I need to concentrate on more athleisure clothing. Keeping it real will save you money!

Shop Your Closet- FIRST!

This week I started to look thru my closet and see where I needed to “fill” some holes. I made a list of some items I need to replace, and others I wanted to add. For me, the list is very small and I will only concentrate on those items. Many of the new trends just don’t work for me and I have no need to add them to my wardrobe.

Don’t Stop Caring About Fashion!

It is easy to just stop caring about fashion. Covid restrictions really put a dampener on the industry as everyone just lived in sweatpants for a year. It got us all used to comfort clothing. I think we can find a nice middle ground between fashion and comfort clothing. Take time this fall to explore your fashion, and see how you can re-incorporate it into your current lifestyle.
