Today we are going to talk about “How do I choose the right serum for my skin?”Are you totally clueless when it comes to serums? You are not alone. GoPure Beauty invited me to test and learn about their products, specifically serums. The first step was learning what is a serum and why I should incorporate it into my skin care routine
**This is a sponsored post with GoPure Beauty. GoPure Beauty supplied the products to test and learn about. The review is my own words. As always, if you have any concerns about your skin seek advice from your doctor or dermatologist.
What Is A Serum?
Good questions, it sounds so scientific. A serum is a skincare product you can apply to your skin after cleansing but before moisturizing to delivering powerful ingredients directly into the skin. Serums are suited to this task because they are made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeply into the skin, delivering a high concentration of active ingredients. This makes them a great tool for targeting specific skincare concerns of women over 50 such as dryness, wrinkles, hormone-induced acne, dark spots, and other skin discolorations.
Do I Still Need A Moisturizer?
Yes, you still need a moisturizer. Serums can be full of moisturizing ingredients but that does not make them moisturizers in a traditional sense. Lotions and creams are richer and create barriers to environmental issues such as pollution and sun (think lotions with sunscreen). Your moisturizer is important as a protectant barrier that allows the serums to work.
How Do I Choose The Right Serum For My Skincare Needs?
Serums can be very expensive with tons of ingredients you really don’t need. Instead of trying to find one serum that does it all, look at the ingredients and learn about what they do and why you need them. Yep, label reading.
So if your problem is
Acne-prone: Look for vitamin C (increases collagen production, enhances skin’s repair process, and reduces inflammation), retinol (also an antioxidant, reduces inflammation), zinc (soothes irritation, regulates oil production), and salicylic acid (unclogs pores).
Dry: Look for vitamin E (an antioxidant, protects cells from oxidative damage), niacinamide (improves skin elasticity, increases ceramide levels in the skin), glycolic acid (gently exfoliates and lightens discoloration), and hyaluronic acid (retains moisture).
Feeling dull: Look for antioxidants like green tea extract, resveratrol, ferulic acid (these combat free radicals, increase the effectiveness of sunscreen by day, and promote cellular repair and healing by night).
GoPure Beauty supplied me with their starter kit on serums. The Facial Serum Trio Kit contains 3 of your basic serums that women over 50 need to incorporate in their daily skincare regime.

***If you have sensitive skin you will want to do a spot test on the serums, especially retinol as some people can find this powerful ingredient causes redness/soreness. Start slowly using it for 2 nights then building up to allow your skin to get used to the retinol.
How Do I Use Serums?
According to the directions on the GoPure Beauty Facial Serum Kit, this is the best way to incorporate serums into your skincare regime:
- Wash and pat dry your face
- Apply a toner using a cotton pad and allow to dry
- With your fingers, apply the Vitamin C Serum to face and neck, massage in for 30-40 seconds and allow to fully absorb into the skin.
- Apply Hyaluronic Acid to face and neck, allow 30-40 seconds to fully absorb into the skin
- Carefully apply eye cream
- Use a moisturizer with sunscreen as part of your daily routine
- Wash face and neck with cleanser, pad dry
- Apply toner with a cotton pad, allow to dry
- With your fingers, apply the Retinol Serum to face and neck areas, massaging in for 30-40 seconds to allow the product to fully be absorbed into the skin
- Apply night cream
A word of caution: Because serums are super potent, more is not always better. Be careful before piling it on. Powerful ingredients can irritate sensitive skin. Always patch-test accordingly.
I have been using GoPure Beauty Facial Serums now for 3 weeks. First off, I love knowing how to use them correctly and what each serum does and why the time of day you use them is important. Next, I have built a beauty routine that I can easily incorporate into my daily life for better skin care. Finally, my skin feels less dull, smoother, softer, and better hydrated. I am extra careful to use a moisturizer with sunscreen and work hard to drink lots of water to stay hydrated. With further use, I am hoping to see the softening of fine lines around my eyes.
