Hello, Darlings! Today is all about the Capsule Wardrobe Challenge- 10 Items 10 Outfits 10 Days. With everyone cleaning out their wardrobes, now is a great time to shop your closet. I am participating in Kettlewell Colours January Challenge. It is all about the capsule wardrobe.
The idea of a capsule wardrobe is that you have a minimum amount of clothing options and you mix and match, creating different looks each day. By doing this, you get a better habit of putting together outfits quickly.
Capsule Wardrobe Challenge- 10 Items 10 Outfits 10 Days
10 Items/10 Outfit /10 Days
Statistically, we only wear 20% of the clothes hanging in our wardrobe. Have you ever taken a really good look at what you chose to wear each day and why? I realized I chose my daily wardrobe based on activity, comfort, and color. Having clothes that fit you properly, look good, are your personal style, and fit your lifestyle can be game-changing.
Winter/Petite Pear/ Mini-Minimialist
What I learned about myself is that I look best in the colors found in the Winter Seasonal Color Palette. Especially when I wear high contrasting combinations.
Next, my body type is “Petite Pear”. I am short waisted and 5’1, so I have to be mindful of fit. Unfortunately, the retail market has a poor selection of clothing for petite, so I must embrace alterations. (unfortunately, my go-to alteration place closed) . But, I can also use color to “trick the eye” to think I am taller.
My body shape is a Pear, which means my bottom half is larger than the top and I have smaller shoulders. After taking the Adore Your Wardrobe Course, I have learned a simple rule for dressing my body, attention up, and out away from my hips and thighs.
Finally, my style personality is mini-minimalist. I don’t like layers, ruffles, lace, collars, nothing stuffy. Comfort is key, but the style is a close second. Wearing the same items but using accessories to change up the look is my wardrobe strategy. So the capsule wardrobe challenge is right up my alley.
Day 1- Comfort And Casual
Day 1- Comfy and Casual is the look of the day. The weather has turned colder and it is an opportunity to pull out one of my favorite pieces, Evie Sweater in Breton Blue. The V neck sweater does not itch, is not overly boxy, fitted, or heavyweight (comfort is key). I have paired it with a “powerhouse” in my wardrobe, the black fleece vest. Mine is from Columbia and is actually Petite size. The black vest created a vertical line that makes me look smaller. Finishing off the look is a POP of color with a lightweight Infinity Scarf from Kettlewell Colours in Fuchsia.
Day 2- Power Of The Vest
Day 2 – Power Of The Vest. Vest are great tools for Pear Body Shape. Not only are they a great layering tool, but they create a vertical line that helps make you look taller and slimmer. I chose this Columbia fleece vest in black to match my pants, distracting from my hips and thighs. My vest hits above the widest part of my body, this is important!
This is my running around town doing errands all day outfit. Elevate your outfits by wearing accessories. So my simple V-neck top in Fuchsia, black bootcut knit pants, and black fleece vest is “leveled-up” by adding a statement necklace, earrings, and bracelet. Now it looks like an actually planned outfit.
Day 3- Power Of The Scarf
Day 3- The Power Of The Scarf. Black pants, a black top, and a gray cardigan would be a very dull, boring outfit. But with the addition of a bright scarf, now it is comfortable and stylish. I have to admit, I have trouble with prints, so I am very choosy about what print I have in my closet. Scarves are one area where I feel I can wear prints with confidence.
This scarf was a “find” from the online consignment store Threds Up. It is originally from Chicos. I like the scarf because it is lightweight, oblong shape, and has many of my Winter colors in it. Plus most of the background is white so it is high contrast. I can see this scarf working for many outfits in my wardrobe.
Day 4- Create A Date Night Look
Day 4- Create A Date Night Look. With COVID running rampant in my community, I don’t really feel comfortable going out in crowds. But my husband and I are trying to keep our Date Night tradition going. We go early to our favorite restaurants, usually during the week, Thursday nights are our favorite.
For my Date Night Look, I have my black Ponte knit pants from Beyond Proper Travel Collection (Petites can get them in Short) as my base. My top is 3/4 inch sleeves with v neck top in Chinese Blue paired with a longer cardigan, Shawl Wrap in Sapphire. The cardigan creates that long line that helps visually draw attention away from my hips. The neckline and color of the top draw attention up to my face and with the addition of a statement necklace/jewelry, the outfit is complete.
Quick and easy look I can re-create over and over again with basic pieces from my closet in multiple colors.
Day 5- Experiment With Color
Day 5- Experiment With Color. Who knew I could wear yellow? I have learned so much about color this year. This color is called Acid Yellow, a cooler shade of yellow. When I wear blue, it almost looks like Lime. The reason it works for me is that the scarf contrasts very well with other Winter colors in my wardrobe. It also draws attention Up towards my face.
I usually only feel comfortable adding 2 bold colors with an outfit in addition to a neutral (black/gray/navy). Too many colors mess with my minimalist style personality. This is why I don’t like prints, figuring this out from trial and error.
Day 6- Add A POP Of Color
Day 6- Add A POP Of Color. If it were up to me, I would wear all black all the time. Even though I have lost 30 lbs, I still feel very conscientious of my body. Some days I just feel bloated and are what we call “fat days”. These are the day I reach for my all black but add a POP of color.
Black will enhance any color. So I pick my favorites such as this Chinese Blue. It adds interest to the outfit and I still feel slimmer, but now have a bit of “happy” to my outfit.
Day 7- Playing With Pantone Colors Of The Year
Day 7- Playing With Pantone Colors Of The Year. The “Colors Of The Year” for 2021 are Illuminating Yellow & Ultimate Gray. Not colors that really excite me. But even thought those shades don’t work, I can still play with the gray/yellow combo. Now, I have already talked about how I can not wear “Yellow” it is too warm. But I have found a shade called “Acid Yellow” that is just cool enough to be apart of my wardrobe
Again, for me, it is all about CONTRAST. For today’s outfit, I have paired my Acid Yellow V Neck top with my gray cardigan (past year from Old Navy). I have added silver jewelry to “cool” the look down even more. I actually quite like it. Things you learn when you experiment in color.
Day 8- Capsule Wardrobe Formula Dressing For Pears
Day 8 – Capsule Wardrobe Formula Dressing For Pears. The basic formula for building an outfit for pears is first, a dark pant. This can be dark/black denim, pants, skirt, skort, or shorts. The idea is that your bottom half needs to be a darker color than your top. Dark Color=Less Attention
Next, chose a top that is lighter with a neckline that will draw attention UP and Out, V Neck, Scoop Neck, Cowl Neck, Off Shoulder, and Halter are all great choices. For color, choose either a lighter color or the color to matches your pants (create a column of color).
Now time for interest, and layers are a great way to do that. Add a cardigan, vest, or jacket. This piece needs to hit above or below the widest part of your body.
Finally, accessories are the “crowning touch” to an outfit. Choose layered or statement necklaces, earrings, bracelets, or even scarves.
Day 9- Keeping It Simple But Colorful
Day 9- Keep It Simple But Colorful. Today I am back in my Breton Blue Evie Sweater. I LOVE the color, feel, and shape of the sweater. Decided against layers today and I am keeping it simple. I could have added some layered or statement necklaces, but I decided to keep it simple but colorful and add an Infinity Scarf in Acid Yellow. Getting out of my comfort zone and exploring color.
Day 10- Be Bold With Color
Day 10- Be Bold With Color. Last year was my “Journey Into Color” and I learned so much. Did you know that even within your seasonal color palette you have WOW colors? WOW, colors are your BEST colors. These are the colors that make you POP. My two favorite WOW colors are Sapphire & Fuchsia. So why not wear them together for a huge impact.
My outfit today consists of Darcy V in Fuchsia paired with my Shawl Wrap cardigan in Sapphire. Black knit bootcut pants and my black Chelsea booties with the pointed toe create my long and lean base. The Eccentric Necklace from Chicos, my favorite hoop earrings, and a silver bracelet complete the look.
Have a day when you need to look and feel your best, pull out your WOW colors.
Shop Your Closet
January is a great time to do a Closet Clean Out. I have written several blog posts on purging your wardrobe. Last weekend I did some “tweaking” in the closet, really getting honest about what I wear and what I don’t. But most importantly, why? Why is that piece not working in my wardrobe? The answers seem to fall into these categories: color, fit, style, or lifestyle.
