What To Do When Your Sinuses Are Acting Up

Hello, Darlings!

Too much shopping and parties, I don’t feel so good. Today I am going to talk about what to do when your sinuses are acting up. I am not necessarily “sick”, what I have are sinus issues and general blahs. With the constant weather changes (seriously! We can go through all the seasons in one day) and the dust and mold, my sinuses are not happy.

What To Do When Sinuses Are Acting Up- Drink HOT Tea

Make Medicine Ball Tea

My daughter introduced me to Starbuck’s Medicine Ball Tea (secret menu item). The last thing I want to do is leave the house when I am feeling “poorly”, so I now have the ingredients to make it at home. Hot tea helps my sinuses get running and keeps me hydrated.

Here’s the recipe:

  • Large mug w/ a bag of Jade Citrus Mint Tea and a bag of Peach Tranquility Tea.
  • Add half hot water and half steamed lemonade.
  • Add a little honey for its anti-microbial effects.
  • Optional: Add a pump of peppermint syrup

You can usually find the Teavana teas at your local Target or order them off Amazon. Another copy-cat version uses Celestrial Seasonings Country Peach Passion tea and Tazo Zen tea. Try to find local honey, some honey from the grocery store is not “real” honey.

How To Make Medicine Ball Tea

Fill your cup 1/2 way or about 2″ with lemonade. I use Simply Lemonade. You want to steam the lemonade, so I just put it in the microwave for about 45 seconds.

Next, fill the rest of the cup with hot water and add one tea bag of Jade Citrus Mint and one tea bag of Peach Tranquility. Both of these teas are really yummy on their own, but together they are HEAVEN!

Next, add peppermint syrup. You can buy some or make your own. To make peppermint syrup you need to do is boil 1 cup of water and dissolve 1 cup of sugar and add in 2 tsp of peppermint extract.

After that, add 1 tablespoon full of honey, but you can add more to make it sweeter or less if you prefer it less sweetened.

So stock up on these ingredients for cold and flu season and make yourself a medicine ball when you feel a cold coming on! You’ll thank me later!

What To Do When Sinuses Are Acting Up-Try Essential Oils

If you are feeling “stuffed up” and need to get things running again, try some essential oil therapy. My favorite for sinus is eucalyptus. You can put drops of essential oils in a diffuser or I like to but them on a hot washcloth and press against my noses and eyes (where I feel the pain). Others like to use it in the shower.

I ordered this from Amazon. It is all-natural with eucalyptus and peppermint with a “strong” menthol scent.

For fans of Vicks Vapor Rub, they have Vicks Vapo Shower Bombs that infuses with shower steam to help open your sinuses. Vicks has combinations of eucalyptus, camphor, nutmeg oil, and cedar leaf oil.

What To Do When Sinuses Are Acting Up- Go For Over The Counter Medicines

Nasal Spray

This stuff is magical. You use to have to get it by prescription but now you can buy it over the counter. It helps open your sinus passages and relieve your symptoms.

It is addicting so use it wisely. **As always, if you are on medications, you want to consult your doctor/pharmacist for adverse reactions.

Cold Meds

I keep only 3 cold meds in my cabinet. Each has very specific use.

For sneezing, watery eyes and basic sinus symptoms, I take Claritin.

For sneezing, watery eyes and basic sinus symptoms, I take Claritin. My sinus symptoms are worse during late fall so at that time of year I take a daily preventive dose. Claritin is the drug Loratadine. For some, Claritin does not work and you will need to try Allegra (Fexofenadine Hydrochloride). Both are for indoor & outdoor allergies.

A runny nose is actually good, it means your body is doing its job. But when the sinuses get clogged and pressure builds (sinus headache) you will want to change to different meds. I like Sudafed PE. It is the drugs Phenylephrine HCL which is a nasal decongestant. It will help your sinuses drain and your nose run.

Okay, now my nose is runny but it is out of control and all that drainage is in my chest and I am coughing up nasty stuff. Mucinex DM is your friend. Mucinex helps thin out the mucus with the drug Guaifenesin. The DM part of Mucinex is for the cough and uses the drug Dextromethorphan.

It also contains Acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain or a slight fever.

When To See A Doctor

The good news is most sinus problems can be remedied with over the counter meds and time. If you start running a fever, coughing up nasty green mucus, sinus problems lasting more the 10 days on meds, or feeling excessively run down, you will want to see a doctor. Your condition may have progressed to a point where antibiotics are needed. As always, if you have breathing problems, see a doctor. Sinus problems can progress quickly into bronchitis and pneumonia due to secondary infection.

Avoid Allergens

Good luck with that! Maybe instead of avoiding I should have said acknowledge. Inside our houses are full of dust and mold spores (both are the biggest cause of sinus problems). Outside you have more of the same. If you are out shopping you can add all this and virus/germs. Even a super neat freak like me acknowledges it is a losing battle. So make sure you have Claritin and Sudafed in the cabinet waiting. Changing your air filters and a good hot washing of your bed sheets and towels will help. Oh, check those ceiling fans…. YUCK!

Boost Immune System

Extra Vitamin C

Many studies have been done on the value of boosting your Vitamin C. I am currently taking the Airborne Immunity Support Vitamin C Supplement. It has 1000 mg of Vitamin C plus Zinc and a lot of other herbal stuff. My teacher friends swear by them.

Elderberry Syrup

Elderberries are from the fruit of the Sambucus tree.  They are used to boost the immune system. Some studies say they can lessen the symptoms of colds and flu.

What To Do When Sinuses Are Acting Up- Eat Therapeutic Hot Soups

What To Do When Sinuses Are Acting Up- Eat Therapeutic Hot Soups

Feed a cold, starve a fever is an old saying that is very much true today. A good old bowl of hot chicken noodle soups does wonders for the body. I also like Thai Coconut Curry Soup, Lemon Chicken Orzo Rice Soup, and Greek Avgolemono Soup (Greek Penicillin).

Best Bets For Feel-Better Soups

  • Broth-based soups. Easy to sip. Easy to digest. Soothing for sore throats.
  • Simple proteins. Try easily digestible tofu, shredded chicken, or seafood to keep your strength up while you’re fighting off the bugs.
  • Healthy Ingredients. Soups made with onions, garlic, tomatoes, and greens are rich in antioxidants. For a quick nutritional boost, serve broth-based soups over raw or lightly sautéed spinach instead of noodles.
  • Congestion-busters. Some folks swear by very spicy soups for clearing out those nasal passages. But if you’re feeling a bit queasy, you might want to proceed with caution.
  • Tummy-friendly. Ginger is effective at settling nausea. Shave some into your broth soup and sip it all day.

What To Do When Sinuses Are Acting UP- Avoid Sugars, Alcohol, And Caffeine

Chance are you are over-indulged in these 3 categories and it is time to cut back and give your body a rest. All three have negative effects on the body which can weaken your immune system. Alcohol and caffeine can be dehydrating too. Add plan water and hot tea to your diet to help your body recover.

Eat A Balanced Diet

It is easy with all the holiday cooking, parties, and eating out to get away from a balanced diet. All those rich foods that you don’t normally eat can wreak havoc on your gut and immune system. Making a conscious plan to eat a more balanced diet during the holidays can help.

Healing Power Of A Good Nights Sleep

For a cold or flu, nothing is as good as a good night’s sleep. Give your body the chance to heal and rest. So many good things happen to your body during the night. Or even a good nap to rest and rejuvenate.

After a great weekend with my kids, where I was passing out hot tea to all those with sniffles, I am ready to start round 2 of 4 for the holidays. Need to run to the store, about out of tissues and maybe pick up the ingredients for some chicken noodle soup..oh.. and replenish my teas!
