Fabulous Hair Starts With A Quality Cut
It has taken me years to find a good hairstylist. When you find one, you have a treasure. My hairstylist is Evan at Salon M2 in Birmingham, Alabama. I have been with her for many years now and I schedule my appointments in January for the entire year. I see her every 4-6 weeks and because I am a loyal customer she is great to change up my appointments or work with me for a special event.
How to find a good hairstylist? Ask! If you like someone’s hair, ask them who they go to. Word of mouth is the best way. Try to find a stylist who is up on the newest cuts, colors, and techniques. They are vested in their skills and it will show in their work.
Use Quality Hair Care Products
Good hairstylist doesn’t come cheap. You get what you pay for. And if you are paying the bucks you want to make sure you use quality products to protect your hair/hair color.
The great news is that you can find salon-quality products in Ulta, Target, and even your local drugstore.
Women Over 50- Tools And Products For Fabulous Hair-My Favorite Styling Products

Women over 50 really need to focus on styling products for their specific hair type. Whether it is curly, thick, fine, or straight, quality products are the key to FABULOUS Hair.
My hair is thin, fine, and I have to beg for volume. Because of the newer styling tools, women like me no longer have to endure perms for volume.
Shampoo/Conditioners

I use Redkin products for shampoo and conditioner. Specifically, the Redken Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner
Other great shampoos/conditioners for color-treated hair include
I have used all these products and can give my personal recommendation.
Texturizing

Do you need a texturizing spray? If you have fine hair, I would totally recommend it. A texturizing spray allows you to create and control your hairstyle without unwanted heat damage. Its lightweight formula helps resist frizz, enhances your hair’s natural shape, definition, and texture, and provides a flexible, long-lasting hold.
My favorite texturizing sprays are
- L’anze Healing Oil Bounce Up Spray
- Redken Fashion Waves 07 Sea Salt Spray
- Redken Wind Blown 05
- Kendra Dry Texture Spray
Dry Shampoo

For those who do not wash their hair every day, dry shampoos are a great alternative and help remove the oils. For second or third day hair, it works great as a texturizing spray to help hold curls.
Volumizer

This is my absolute favorite root lift. I use this product after the texturizing spray on the crown of my head to help get me height. I tried several other products, they were fine, but I keep coming back to this one.

My daughter LOVEs The Redken Aerate 08 Bodifying Cream For Volume And Texture
Root Touch Up

This is magic. If you want your hair to instantly look thicker, use this color as a stamp directly on the scalp. This product comes in different shades and is great for covering gray.
Finishing Hair Spray

This is the BEST hairspray.

Lynsey from Perfectly Undone Beauty, a hair studio that specializes in weddings and professional photoshoots recommends Amika Touchable Hairspray. Amika touchable hairspray is a flexible hold perfect for events and it smells amazing.

Hair Masque
Deep moisture therapy treatment for extremely dry hair. After all the parties and events, your hair can get very dry and brittle. These at-home products are great for adding back moisture.

Are you a teaser?

If you tease your hair in the back for lift, Lynsey recommends Big And Sexy Powder Play It gives instant volume to dry hair. She uses it all the time on brides. Teasing is great for back volume or even to hide some thinning areas. Make sure you have a teasing brush/comb.
Women Over 50- Tools And Products For Fabulous Hair-Invest In Quality Styling Tools
The right styling tools make the difference in recreating on a daily basis the hairstyle you walked out of the salon with. Don’t be shy about asking for a tutorial on how to style your hair from your hairstylist. Have someone video it on your cell phone for you so you can have it at home and practice.
