Hello, Darlings!
Do you change your makeup routine for fall and winter? I wear very little makeup in the spring and summer. Mostly because of the heat and humidity and it just sweats right off or clogs my pores. But with all the events and festivities in the fall and winter, I like to wear more. Not only for color and coverage, but also for protection from the elements.

Do You Change Your Makeup Routine For Fall And Winter?
These are some of my most used and favorite makeup products for fall/winter. Because my skin color is quite a bit darker in the summer, I do use a lighter color foundation in the winter. Sometimes I will even mix the darker with my lighter to create a “transitional color” or use bronzer.
Use A Primer
One of the biggest changes I make in my makeup routine for the fall and winter is to use a makeup primer. Priming your skin helps the color go on smoother and stay longer. You will still need to use your moisturizer as part of your daily skincare regime.
MAC Prep + Prime

MAC Prep + Prime is a lightweight gel lotion that you put on before your makeup to help even out the redness in your skin tone and prepare your face for makeup
Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer

Another good option is Smashbox’s Photo Finish line. With lots of photos during the holidays, you want your make up to have a photo finish. It starts with a primer. This one from Smashbox is another great product to create a smoother finish.
MAC Prep + Prime Lip

MAC Prep + Prime Lip is a color-free lipstick base that adds light moisture, smoothes and refines. Plus it improves the appearance of your lipstick.
MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot for eye area primer

MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot in the color Painterly is a long-wearing blendable cream shadow that can be worn alone or with other products. I put it all over my eyelid to help eyeshadow last longer.

Start With A Long Wear Foundation
Your makeup needs to last all day or all evening, you need to invest in a quality foundation. I LOVE the MAC Studio Fix line for full coverage.
MAC Studio Fix Foundation

Because it is all about the pictures, you want to be camera ready for the holidays. Smashbox Studi Skin Full Coverage is another great choice for a long-wearing foundation.

Eyeshadow Palette For Travel
Eyeshadow Palettes are all the rage. The reason is that not only does it take the guesswork out of figuring out color hues that work together, but it keeps them together for ease of travel.

Lipsticks/Lip Pencils

Lip Pencils are a great tool to define the lips and to add a base color. Whether you use a lip pencil before or after you apply lipstick is up to you. I use a lip pencil before, to line my lips and to color in my lips to add a base color.
Because my skin is an olive tone and slightly darker, I need lipsticks that have a deeper color. I try to purchase the matching lip pencil that goes with or compliments my lipstick colors. My collection is actually quite small as I try to only buy what I really use and just replace my favorites.
Here are some of my favorites
- Bobbi Brown Rum Raisin Lip Pencil
- Bobbi Brown Rum Raisin Lipstick (rich plum brown)
- Bobbi Brown Raisin (medium plum brown)
- MAC Viva Glam III– (muted brownish plum)
- MAC Spice Lip Pencil
- MAC Half Red Lip Pencil (neutral pinky rose)
- MAC Whirl Lip Stick & Pencil (this color does not show up on me but it is my daughters favorite for fall- Dirty Rose)
Eyeliners/Mascara
I do not wear mascara on a regular basis due to my contacts. When I do I wear free samples or drug store brands that I can throw away after a season. I have to be very careful with mascara that does not flake or I will have pieces stuck to my contacts all evening.
I am a huge fan of Bobbi Brown’s Gel Eyeliners. They have a long wear waterproof line too.
Eye Brow Pencil

There are lots of eyebrow pencils in the market. The key is not to go too dark. My favorite is Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz – lots of colors to choose from

Invest In Make-Up Brushes
High-quality makeup brushes can cost $20-50 apiece. The difference between low and high is all about the bristles. The high-quality bristles are more natural fibers that feel silky to your skin when you apply makeup.
With the holidays around the corner, you might score on a great higher-quality brush set. You really only need a couple of brushes
- Powder Brush
- Blush Brush
- Several Eyeshadow Brushes
- One Angle Eyeshadow Brush
Some people like to apply their foundation/concealer with a brush. Others use their hands or beauty blender/sponge. Whatever you use, make sure you clean it regularly to prevent infection/acne.
