Today in my Wardrobe Basics series, sweaters. Finally, with sweater weather right around the corner, it is time to do a wardrobe check on your selection of sweaters for layering and warmth.
Wardrobe Basics- Sweaters For Layering And Warmth
The Ultimate Sweater For Warmth
I have this sweater on right now. The material is the softest thing you will ever feel. Lightweight with … pockets, this is the ultimate lounging around the house sweater. I gave this sweater to the girls in my family and it was a HUGE hit. Makes the BEST Christmas present. Nordstrom has it in 13 colors including the newest, Rosewood.
Barefoot Dreams has several different styles of cardigans, but this is my favorite. Perfect for traveling on a plane, or even to add style and warmth to a casual outfit for a fall outdoor trip.
What Style Of Sweater Looks Best On My Body Type
When choosing a sweater, think less boxy and more fitted. The newest trend is to belt a boxy sweater to make it look more fitted and figure-flattering. In my post Wardrobe Basics- Tops That Flatter Your Figure, I talk about different necklines. The same recommendations apply to sweaters. V-necklines are flattering to all body types, cowl necklines that are not too overpowering, crew necklines are not as flattering but do provide a base to add scarves and jewelry. Beware of turtlenecks, some may make you look like you have no neck at all. The mock turtleneck is a better choice.
You want to make sure that the sweater does not hit you at your widest point or it will make you look larger.
Cardigans For Layering
The most popular style of sweaters is the cardigan. Look for cardigans that are lighter weight, less bulking for layering. Avoid cardigans with crew necks that button up, they are not as flattering. V-neck, shawl collar, or straight create a nice line that makes you look taller. Wear a darker color as a base layer to create a slimmer look.
Use Sweaters To Add Color And Style In Your Wardrobe.
Since most of my basic tops are black and navy, sweaters add color in my wardrobe. In addition to sweaters as a basic layering piece, I will add colorful scarves and statement jewelry to build a stylish outfit. I do not buy very expensive cashmere sweaters, instead, my collection consists of lighter weight pieces that are more fitting to my climate. This year I am adding shades of green to my collection. My closet looks like a kaleidoscope of colors. Now, I do have several black, gray, and white sweaters because they are great basics to have- but why not add some fun with color.

Another wet day here in Alabama, I am doing a little fall cleaning today in my Barefoot Dreams Cardigan with my fall Harvest Yankee Candle burning. It feels like a warm cozy. Oh, and my daughter made chicken noodle soup yesterday so I have the leftovers for lunch- WINNING!.
