When planning an outfit for an outing or event you need to include shoes in the plan. Don’t just think you have what you need. Evaluate the event for weather and venue. Many weddings are held in non-traditional venues, can you walk in those heels up a mountain? In a field? How long are you going to have to wear them? Also, look at your shoes, are they in need of updating, are they worn out, do they still fit? Crazy as it may seem, your foot size may have changed since the last time you wore heels.
If you have to shop for shoes, it may take many pairs to find the right ones for your foot. I can wear a size 8 1/2 in one shoe, 9 in another, wide or medium width depending on the shoe design and manufacturer.
Many Stores Are Carrying Less Inventory In Stock So Last Minute Shoe Buying Can Be Tricky
I recently tried to run out to a major department store to by some cute walking shoes for a last-minute weekend trip. Between the 3 shoes, I chose to try on, the store did not have my size in any of them but were quick to tell me that they could order online and have it sent to my house. A week after my trip.
Evaluate Your Shoes For Comfort -FIRST!!!
Each person’s feet are different. You may have unique problems that make wearing certain types of shoes difficult. Having the basics to wear with all outfits is more important to you than ever. I had plantar fasciitis a couple of years back so I had to do some “creative shoe buying” to have the basics I needed. It took almost 2 years to get better so my planning ahead was key and I still wear those shoes because they were COMFORTABLE
Shoes You Need In Your Closet- Basic Black Flats
A basic black comfortable flat shoe will take you to almost all your events. I have even gotten away with a black flat to a formal event. The style of the shoe is your preference, you may even change styles with the seasons. I have stylish black flat sandals for summer, a standard black flat for everyday use, and a dressier black flat in suede for holidays or events. Only 3 shoes but they all are COMFORTABLE.

Shoes You Need In Your Closet- Black Boots/ Booties
Now is the time to check on those boots/ booties. With the change in seasons, you should have plenty of options to try for comfort. I have only 2 pairs, one short bootie that is waterproof that I can wear with jeans and pants. The other is a taller boot that I can tuck in my jeans or wear with a dress for a more casual look.

Shoes You Need In Your Wardrobe- Heels
Heels are usually were everyone struggles. I know I did because some dresses you just can’t get away without them. The good news is that heels come in a wide array of heels heights and different shaped heels. Comfort brands such as Naturalizer and Aersole have a nice selection for you to try.
My heels for many of my wedding events are from Stuart Weitzman. Stuart Weitzman is a little more expensive but I found mine on a great sale and was able to buy them in several colors (black, nude). They have a platform base that makes them much more comfortable. Sam Edleman has a similar style at a lower price point many people like.

Shoes You Need In Your Closet-Casual Walking Tennis Shoe
With the athleisure trend in fashion, a walking shoe is a must to have in your closet. Easy slip-on style will be your go-to for running errands. I have the Sketchers Go Walk. Lightweight, breathable style is perfect for the more casual empty nester. I have the all-black with black bottoms to wear with my ponte knit pants and black leggings. The Sketchers do come in fun colors and a ballet flat style.

Shoes You Need In Your Closet-Athletic Shoes
As an avid tennis player, I am very particular about my tennis shoes. They have to be comfortable out of the box, no “break-in period”. Two brands that I love are the New Balance and Asics. So many different styles for tennis and well as walking/running. Brooks also makes an excellent walking/running shoe.

Where To Buy Shoes Online?
Online shoe buying has never been easier. A very important thing to remember when buying shoes online do not buy from stores that do not offer free shipping and free returns. Some online retailers offer free shipping but will charge you a fee for returns or restocking. Because shoe sizes vary from style to style you may need to try several different pairs to find the perfect shoe. Once you learn what brand of shoe works best for your feet, buying in the correct size is easier.
- Zappos
- Macy’s
- Nordstrom
- Many department stores offer free shipping and return if you use there credit card.
Zappos is my favorite online retailer for shoe shopping. If you sign up for their rewards program you get 2-day business shipping and instant credit for refund as soon as it is scanned by UPS pickup (usually it takes 5-10 business days for you to see credit for refund). If you shop for shoes on Amazon, you might find you are actually shopping with Zappos. Downsize is that you can not take advantage of coupons or store deals and they may not be the best price.
As the weather turns cooler, it is time to do a Wardrobe Check? Between Columbus Day and Veteran’s Day, the stock is usually at its highest. Veteran’s Day Sales can be better than Black Friday.
