My dogs rule the nest. It is a simple fact and one that I am not that upset about. One of the first things I noticed after my children all moved out is how quiet it is. The chaos of life with kids was gone and I missed it. But don’t worry, my canine children have assumed the role with glee.
Meet Emma Sue
Emma is a toy size mini schnauzer with very silky fur and black and white markings. She is the DIVA. This sweet girl is pretty and she knows it! Lapdog extraordinaire, but don’t be fooled, Emma rules the nest.
Gracie is the newest addition to the nest. She is a mini schnauzer with black and gray markings. Gracie wakes up each day thinking “this is the BEST day ever”. Full of energy and enthusiasm she can be quite mischievous but in a goofy kind of way.
Meet Nora- The Grandpup
Nora is Gracie’s sister and littermate. With the sweetest face, Nora greets you as if you are the greatest person ever. She is my daughter, Anna’s dog and rules her nest. Nora is the official mascot of Anna’s business, Homzie Designs. When Anna is meeting with clients or needs a quiet day to get work done. Nora enjoys plays days at Mimi’s (that’s my grandmother name).
We are huge Auburn fans, both me and my husband, plus my daughter, and one of my sons are Auburn University graduates. Fall football season is a fun time to dress up the pups. Now, you have to “catch” Gracie to put her cheerleader outfit on. Emma is easier and will pose for pictures.
Traveling Pups- Dog’s Rule The Nest Where Ever They Go
The weekends are made for travel. With homes at both the lake and the beach, we find our weekends filled with travel. Don’t worry, the dog love to get in their doggie car seats and snuggle down for the ride. They will sleep the entire way, even the 4 hours to the beach.
Emma and Gracie ride in the K&H Pet Products Bucket Booster Seat. This dog car set is elevated so they can see out the window. Luckily the girls do not get car sick, but the cushion comes out for easy cleaning if needed, and it has restraint leashes (which is needed for Gracie). I have 2 large size booster seat so each dog has their own space and can snuggle down.
Boating At The Lake
Because my lakehouse is only an hour drive from my house, it is an easy getaway. Nothing drops your stress level like an evening boat ride. The dogs LOVE going “bye-bye boat”. They enjoy feeling the breeze on their faces, or just finding a shady spot for a nap. We even chose the boat because it has built-in dog bowls.
Because we have a pool at both the Birmingham house and the beach house, plus the lake water, it is important that all my dogs know how to swim and know where to swim to if they fall in. Each season we review, swimming lessons to remind them. Emma does not like to get her hair wet and will act disgusted when she is forced to do her lessons. Gracie and her goofy self just go with the flow. Afterward, they enjoy lounging by the pool napping in the shade or sunny themselves on the pool deck. Ahhh the dog’s life……
They both love hanging out on the raft, or what we call “Dog Island”. They want to be apart of the fun too when everyone is in the pool.
At the lake, life jackets are required for all in the water, humans, and dogs. Bright pink life jackets help build confidence in their swimming and help us find them in the water. With handles on the top, it is easy to grab them and lift the dogs out of the water and on to the dock.

In Memory Of Abbie
Abbie crossed over the Rainbow Bridge, February 2018. She was the sweetest mini schnauzer. Just a country dog at heart, she would spend her days exploring outside and enjoyed just laying around in the yard keeping all the critters in check. I miss her…….
Empty Nest Life
As we venture into this new world called “Empty Nesting” Dan and I realize the importance of our fury babies. They keep up active (daily walks) they amuse us (especially Gracie) and they are our snuggle buddies (Emma is the best snuggler). Our house would be so quiet and lonely without them.
