Is There Such A Things As Too Much Pumpkin Spice?

Hello, Darlings!

I am taking some well-deserved R&R at the beach this week.  But even here at the beach, I am seeing so many things that are “pumpkin spice”.  With the cooler weather settling in it makes me finally excited for fall and with fall comes…. pumpkin spice. Let’s make this perfectly clear, I LOVE pumpkin spice.  Nothing says fall like colorful leaves and the smell of pumpkin spice.  I horde pumpkin spice coffee like a squirrel hordes acorns. So the question is “Is there such a thing as too much Pumpkin Spice?”.

What Is Pumpkin Spice?

Pumpkin Spice is a combination of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, dry ginger, clove, and/or allspice mixed together.  Why do we love it so much?  Well, according to some scientist for the food industry, it triggers a “nostalgia emotional response”.  We have been wired from an early age it associated the smell of pumpkin spice with something that is “good” such as holiday memories, treats, celebrations…. the things that childhood memories are made of.  Pumpkin Spice is not just an “American thing”, the spice combinations are used in many cultures such as Indian and Middle Eastern for centuries.  Marketers had latched on to this trend and have gone is full crazy mode.

Pumpkin Spice Coffee

Starbucks became a star with their Pumpkin Spice Latte.  I am going to let you in on a secret….. I don’t like it.  Starbucks coffee is too bitter and the Pumpkin Spice Latte is too sweet for me. But, oh yes… there is a but, I do like Pumpkin Spice Coffee and Pumpkin Spice Creamer, together or separate.  Here are my favorites…hint… you can get them in your local grocery store

Pumpkin Spice Candles

Because smell is such a trigger for memories and emotions, the candle is the perfect vessel for the pumpkin spice scent. I am a “candle person” so this is my area of expertise.  There are so many candles out there this year in fall scents.  My favorite is Yankee Candles Harvest.  Harvest has been out there for many years and still is my favorite.  I stock up on them when they go for Buy 2 get 2 Free.

This year I was introduced to Tyler Candle’s Pumpkin Spice candle.  Love it! Of course, they had me with the cheetah print lid.

Go Homemade Or Go Home!

No, I am serious! There are so many food products out there with pumpkin spice added for fall marketing value.  If you would not eat them regularly Do Not Eat Them NOW!!!  I have seen cinnamon rolls, cereal, yogurt, cookies,…. on and on and on.  If you are going to use those calories, go for homemade.  My daughter made me the most incredible Baked Pumpkin Spice Donuts from a recipe she got from Elizabeth & Butter.  They were perfect with coffee on a fall morning.  I usually do not eat sweets for breakfast total protein me in the mornings, but I made an exception for these.

Also, I had a pumpkin spice dip served with ginger snaps that were divine.

My only exception to the homemade rule is ….ICE CREAM.  Halo makes a Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream with only 360 calories for the entire pint.  Well worth the calories for the sweet treat. It is a seasonal item and may be sold out, but I am going to testify to it being…. FABULOUS!!!

Pumpkin Spice Beauty Products- Buyer Beware!

This is where I think we have gone too far.  Really! A rule of thumb is if you like your beauty products smelling sweet you will like these.  I like my beauty products clean smelling so I did not like any of them.

Pumpkin Spice Products I Do Love

There are some pumpkin spice products I do love. Lip Balm in Pumpkin Spice.  It is kinda like eating it, especially if you lick your lips all day longs.  Then you will need the next one, Whish Pumpkin Lip Scrub. I was able to purchase this as a “special buy” on my FabFitFun account for members only.  With the cool windy days and nights of fall, a lip scrub is a must.  It is an easy and fast way to get rid of those peeling chapped lips. I have seen some great recipes for homemade lip scrub too.

Christmas Can Wait

Don’t let the marketing people push you into Christmas.  With Halloween over they are going to be shoving Christmas down our throats.  Step back and enjoy the fall with it wonderful smells, changing leaves, cool crisp nights.  This is the most wonderful time of the year.
